Walter Howard (born November 4, 1910 in Jena ; † May 9, 2005 in Moritzburg-Friedewald ) was a German sculptor .

biography

As a trained typesetter , Howard was persecuted during the Nazi era because of his communist and anti-fascist attitudes and sent to the Brandenburg prison for two years .

From 1946 to 1951 Howard studied sculpture at the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee under Heinrich Drake , Fritz Koelle and Bernhard Heiliger, among others .

After graduating from 1951 to 1953, he was a master student at the German Academy of the Arts in Berlin with Gustav Seitz and Fritz Cremer .

After two years of freelance work, Howard worked from 1955 to 1960 as an assistant and later as a lecturer at the University of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee, where he developed a long-term friendship with the sculptor Theo Balden, among others .

In 1961, Howard moved to Radebeul to work as a lecturer for building sculpture at the Technical University of Dresden . It was here that he was appointed professor in 1963 . Howard worked at the TU until his retirement in 1969. From 1970, Howard continued to work as a sculptor, relieved of teaching obligations. In 1992 Howard moved from Radebeul to Dedeleben in the Harz Mountains, but returned to Saxony a short time later.

In 2005 Howard died in the Moritzburg district of Friedewald .
