A coilover suspension or screw -type suspension is an automobile or motorcycle chassis that allows the ground clearance to be adjusted by means of a thread on the strut .

In motorcycles, especially motocross or enduro machines, this has been widespread on the rear wheel for decades, albeit not always continuously.

In the 1990s, coilovers also found their way from motorsport to street cars. In addition to sports drivers, the target groups are especially tuning enthusiasts who prefer minimal ground clearance. The ground clearance can be adjusted almost as desired by means of threads on the shock absorber, which enable individual settings with lock nuts.

Alternatively, systems are widespread in which the height adjustment is achieved by turning the entire shock absorber (spring & damper) into a lower holder (bracket). Adjusting the height is made much easier without any spring pressure and there is no need for auxiliary springs (weight reduction). The preload and thus the spring deflection can be changed separately according to individual needs. Depending on the preload, the compression travel and the progressivity of the suspension can be reduced or increased in a controlled manner in functional connection with the travel limiter as an additional spring element.

In this way, the ground clearance can be adjusted to different tire diameters or an extremely low ground clearance can be set for show or sports purposes. At the same time, you can achieve practical ground clearance in everyday life with little effort.

Systems for professional use, who want to make adjustments to the setup in addition to adjusting the ground clearance, offer adjustable rebound and compression damping and a spring base. This allows the pitching and rolling behavior as well as the traction of the vehicle to be influenced in order to adapt them to your own needs or the respective race track.

variants

There are different versions of coilovers:

  • Front axle with thread, rear axle not adjustable.
  • Front axle with thread, rear axle with thread, without preload spring, height adjustment via bracket.
  • Front axle with thread, rear axle with thread.
  • Front axle with thread and adjustable spring base, rear axle with thread.
  • Front axle with thread and adjustable spring base, rear axle with thread and adjustable spring base.
  • Front and rear axles with thread, adjustable spring base, compression and rebound.
  • Front and rear axles with thread, adjustable spring base, with air bellows (air spring) as a spring replacement. Allows extremely deep parking for "Show and Shine Tuning", mobile height in everyday use.
  • "Clubsport" coilovers for the Nürburgring Nordschleife, tourist drives on racetracks etc.
  • "Competition" racing coilover kits for national and international racing use.
  • "Street Comfort" coilovers for an individual lowering (5 to 45 mm) with the highest possible driving comfort.
  • Extreme lowering for show purposes, i. d. Usually without TÜV certificate (50 to 150 mm if necessary more).
  • KW Quad coilovers for quads and ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) with adjustable compression and rebound damping
