Fritz Koelle
Fritz Koelle (born March 10, 1895 in Augsburg , † August 4, 1953 in Probstzella on the Munich-Berlin interzone train) was a German sculptor.
Life
Typical of Koelle's early work are his worker sculptures, including a. The miner in front of the driveway , the block waltz or blast furnace worker .
Because of his “Bolshevik conception of art”, a prison sentence was applied for in the Dachau concentration camp in 1934 . A professorship previously promised at the Munich Academy was rejected by the state. After a few days of Gestapo interrogation, the artist was finally released from prison and even received state commissions, B. the order for the production of a Horst Wessel bust. He also took part in the GDK , for example in 1937 with the Saarbergmann with miner's lamp and in 1942 with Der Steinbrecher .
Immediately after the end of the war, Koelle's artistic work in the Nazi state was condemned in some media. Even now his attempts to obtain a professorship fail. According to his critics, his works were too conform and too adapted to the Nazi regime's understanding of art.
In 1946 Koelle was recognized as a politically persecuted person. In 1950 the artist finally received a professorship at the University of Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee .
The sculpture Inferno , which was planned as a memorial for the Dachau concentration camp memorial in 1946, is particularly impressive and shocking , but it was considered too cruel and therefore rejected. Koelle then made another plastic concentration camp inmate , which was placed in front of the crematorium of the Dachau concentration camp.
Koelle was married to the painter Elisabeth Koelle-Karmann .
Fritz-Koelle-Straße in Augsburg is named after him.
