Gerhard Bengsch (pseudonyms: Terenz Abt, Gerhard B. Wenzel, Renate Gaerber ; born November 24, 1928 in Berlin ; † March 11, 2004 in Kleinmachnow ) was a German writer and screenwriter and from 1954 a member of the GDR Writers' Association .

Life

Bengsch began his career after the end of the Second World War as a reporter and editor for the Berliner Zeitung . In the early 1950s he published his first short stories in the GDR and wrote the novel Bodelsang Institute under suspicion of murder .

The Bulgarian director Slatan Dudow , who is closely associated with Bertolt Brecht , invited Bengsch in 1954 to help write the screenplay for his film Frauenschicksale . This was the beginning of Bengsch's career as a screenwriter. He wrote the scripts for several DEFA feature films, television games, television films and TV multi-part series for German television . In 1968 ARD broadcast the GDR television film Irrlicht und Feuer, which was based on a script by Bengsch. At the meeting of the Berlin section of the GDR Writers' Union on June 7, 1979 in East Berlin, Bengsch voted for the exclusion of the censorship- opposed writers Stefan Heym , Klaus Schlesinger , Adolf Endler , Klaus Poche , Joachim Seyppel , Karl-Heinz Jakobs , Rolf Schneider , Dieter Schubert and Kurt Bartsch .

Before reunification , Bengsch wrote (under the pseudonyms Renate Gaerber and Gerhard B. Wenzel) for ARD Karambolage (1989) and Musikwechsel (1990). Bengsch then wrote the reunification comedy Grüß Gott, Comrade for ARD Dornberger in 1992 and the reunification comedy in 1993 , as well as scripts for TV series for ARD and private broadcasters.

Finally, Bengsch turned back to his writing activity. In 1997 he wrote the satire Mr. Minister sends greetings ; 1998 followed. An answer is requested and the story Good night, Antonio; 2000 appeared u. a. Prünzke & Prott , a collection of satirical stories. In 2003 the Scheunen-Verlag published Der Colonel von Cattenberg . In March 2004 the last work by the author was published by BS Verlag Rostock: Failure to help - two criminal cases .

Bengsch was awarded the Theodor Fontane Prize of the Potsdam district in 1960 and received the FDGB Art Prize from 1967 to 1969 and 1980 and the DFD Literature Prize in 1975 . He was also awarded several silver and gold laurels from the DFF . He received the GDR National Prize for art and literature twice, in 1969 1st class in a collective and in 1980 2nd class. In 1994 he was honored with the DAG television award .

He lived in Kleinmachnow since 1956. His grave is in the village's forest cemetery.
