Bernd Göbel (born October 15, 1942 in Freiberg ) is a German sculptor , medalist and graphic artist .

Life

Bernd Göbel did an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor from 1961 to 1963 . Then from 1963 to 1969 he studied sculpture at the University of Industrial Design in Halle (Saale) with Gerhard Lichtenfeld .

From 1969 to 1973 he was assistant to Gerhard Lichtenfeld, from 1973 a lecturer. In 1978 Göbel received a lectureship and became head of the sculpture class at Giebichenstein Castle. In 1982 he was appointed professor of plastic at the Halle University of Industrial Design, Burg Giebichenstein, and since 1991 has also been the university's prorector. In March 2008, he resigned from university.

Bernd Göbel continued the Halle tradition of sculpting in teaching in the third generation, so that he trained many students in this sense. These students include Carsten Theumer, Bernd Kleffel, Marcus Golter, Steffen Ahrens, Maya Graber , Anne-Karen Hentschel, Petra Schwenzfeier, Katrin Pannicke , Martin Rödel, Adelheid Fuss, Stefan Voigtländer, Bruno Raetsch and others. a.

He was able to teach his students how to create medals and how to make a coin. He himself was invited to competitions for the design of 10 DM and 10 € commemorative coins for the Ministry of Finance.

Bernd Göbel has been a member of FIDEM (Fédération Internationale de la Médaille d'Art) since 1987 and has been a manager of the German Society for Medal Art to this day .

Bernd Göbel also works as a graphic artist; he is a wood cutter, with which he resumes the tradition of Gerhard Marcks .

Awards

Bernd Göbel received international recognition primarily as a medalist: he was the first German to receive the Sandford Saltus Prize of the American Numismatic Society in New York in 2000 and the FIDEM Grand Prix in Paris in 2002.

Further awards: 1973 Will Lammert Prize Berlin, 1975 Gustav Weidanz Prize for sculpture from Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle, 1984 Art Prize of the GDR , 1988 Art Prize of the FDGB .

In 2000 Bernd Göbel became an honorary member of the ANS (American Numismatic Society).

In 2012 he received the Hilde Bröer Prize from the German Society for Medal Art for his life's work in the field of medal creation.

Art in public space

Göbel's works in public space include numerous monuments, groups of figures and fountains, which are mainly found in cities in central Germany. His most famous works are:

  • Fortuna fountain in Freiberg (1981–1984)
  • Monument to the young Johann Sebastian Bach on the market square of Arnstadt (1982–1984)
  • Monument to Bertolt Brecht (1976–1981) and Kurt Weill (1995–1997) on Lidice Square in Dessau
  • Figure group "Peace carries life" on the Friedensplatz in Dessau and on the Lichtenhäger Brink in Rostock-Lichtenhagen (1974–1977)
  • Sculptures "Bathers" and "Shirt Removal" in the city park in Dessau
  • "Untimely contemporaries", also "the beginning of a series", in Grimmaische Strasse in Leipzig (1986–1989)
  • Monument to the founder of insurance company Ernst-Wilhelm Arnoldi on Arnoldiplatz in Gotha , popularly mocked as a hunchback due to his controversial artistic representation with a tense and crooked back (1991)
  • Market fountain ("Göbel-Brunnen") on the Hallmarkt in Halle (1976–1997). The theme is the history of the city of Halle. The depiction of Cardinal Albrecht with his mistress caused heated discussions even before the display in 1998.
