Commemorative coins of the Federal Republic of Germany
Commemorative coins of the Federal Republic of Germany , which refer to memorable events, have been issued since 1953. The coins , the edition of which is officially limited, are valid means of payment, but are generally not in normal circulation , but are collector's items. The federal government, as the holder of the right to mint, commissions the mints of the federal states with the production. The coins are designed by an artist and each have an illustration on the face side in connection with the purpose of the issue. The value side shows an eagle in a form adapted to the motif. The Federal Ministry of Finance has the supervision .
Until the end of 2001, commemorative coins were minted in the currency " Deutsche Mark ". There were motifs with face values of 5 DM and 10 DM. In the history of the Deutsche Mark, a gold coin (not a " Goldmark ") was issued in 2001.
Since the currency changeover on January 1, 2002, German federal coins valid for exchange have been given the currency designation “ Euro ”. All previous issues will be exchanged for an unlimited period by the Deutsche Bundesbank for euros. After this date, commemorative coins of 2, 10, 100 and 200 euros were issued. On June 23, 2010, the first 20 euro commemorative gold coin appeared. In 2015, a 25 euro commemorative silver coin was issued for the first time. Since 2016, silver commemorative coins with a nominal value of 20 euros and commemorative coins made of copper-nickel with a ring made of polymer with a nominal value of 5 euros have been in circulation. In 2017, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Reformation , a 50 euro gold coin was issued for the first time. In 2019, the issue of 10 euro coins with a transparent polymer ring started.
Euro commemorative coins are not valid in the entire currency area, but only in the country of issue. The 2 euro commemorative coins are an exception ; they are means of payment in all countries of the euro zone . The commemorative coins of higher denominations are mainly collected and are therefore rarely in circulation. The European Commission even recommends preventing the use of euro collector coins as a means of payment.
Commemorative silver coins are produced in the Federal Republic of Germany in two quality levels. The normal degree of embossing is " uncirculated ". For coin collectors there is a version in " mirror finish" available only from the sales point for collector coins ; this also applies to the 2 euro coins issued since 2006. All gold coins issued up to the year 2007 were minted with a brilliant finish.
The manufacturing mint issued both qualities of the DM commemorative coins until 1997 , after which the mirror finish was minted by all issuing offices. The euro commemorative coins will again be completely produced by the respective mint . With the exception of the 2 euro issue, all commemorative coins have so far been made of Magnimat , various alloys of silver or gold of the highest purity. The silver coins are generally made by a single mint at a time. The only exceptions so far have been the issues of four major sporting events: the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany, the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin and the 2011 Alpine Skiing World Cup , which were produced by all mints. The gold coins of the Federal Republic of Germany are also available from every mint.
history
Before 1871 there were different currency units and coin systems in the many German states , which resulted in different commemorative coins. After 1871 (the establishment of the German Empire) the mark was introduced as a uniform means of payment for the German Empire . Since then, all means of payment and thus also the commemorative coins have been denominated in Marks. The preferred metals for minting such coins were and still are silver and gold. However, today's silver alloy differs from the earlier ones. Common denominations were 2 marks, 3 marks, 5 marks, 10 marks and 20 marks. During the Weimar Republic between 1919 and 1933 and the Hitler dictatorship ( period of National Socialism ), 1933–1945, there were uniform imperial German commemorative coins made of silver. These were 3 and 5 marks from 1925 to 1932 and 2 and 5 marks from 1934 to 1939.
Face side and value side
The face changes according to the reason for the issue, the value side always shows an eagle, the value determined by the Federal Government, the year of issue and the mint in the form of a letter for each mint (A: Staatliche Münze Berlin; D: Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt in Munich; F : State Mint Stuttgart; G: State Mint Karlsruhe; J: Hamburg Mint). All commemorative coins since 2002 have twelve stars on the value side. The design of the value side is often adapted to the motif on the picture side or is directly related to it; As an example, the commemorative edition designed by Jordi Regel for the 50th anniversary of German television shows the eagle almost rectangular and flat without the development of feathers and thus follows the shape of a television .
Commemorative coins from 1953 to 2001 (currency denomination Deutsche Mark)
Commemorative coins of the Federal Republic of Germany were originally produced by the four mints that existed at the time: the Bavarian Main Mint with the code letter “D”, the Stuttgart State Mint (“F”), the Karlsruhe State Mint (“G”) and the Hamburg Mint (“J "). The nationally owned company Münze Berlin, which emerged from the former Berlin Mint ("A") during the GDR, has been minting under the new name Staatliche Münze Berlin since 1990 . In 2007 there were five mints working for the Federal Ministry of Finance in Germany.
The first commemorative coin of the Federal Republic of Germany was issued on September 11, 1953. In the following, the coins are mentioned that achieved a significant increase in value or have another special feature compared to the total of 87 issues in the currency denomination Deutsche Mark.
The first five commemorative coins
More than five years after the currency reform in the Federal Republic of Germany, the first commemorative coin worth 5 German marks was issued in 1952 . Of the 200,000 minted copies, 1,240 coins were made in mirror finish , the rest were made in uncirculated finish. The mint was the Bavarian Main Mint in Munich; Like all subsequent 5 DM coins, the coin was minted from 625 silver until 1979. It was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg and shows an Ostrogothic fibula with a stylized image of an eagle on the picture side .
The following four issued coins each commemorate a single person and show their head as a portrait . The face value was always 5 DM:
- The reason for the minting of the second coin was the 150th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's death in 1955. The manufacturer was the coin in Stuttgart, which had existed since 1872. The edition was 198,783 uncirculated coins and 1,217 specimens in mirror finish.
- In the same year, another coin was minted for the 300th birthday of the Margrave of Baden, Ludwig Wilhelm , the so-called "Türkenlouis". This silver coin had a circulation of 2000 pieces in mirror finish and 198,000 copies in die finish. The minting of the coin took over the mint in Karlsruhe.
- Two years later, the commemorative coin to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Baron Joseph von Eichendorff followed in 1957 . It had the same edition numbers as the previous one and was produced by the Hamburg Mint .
All four of the mints that existed in the Federal Republic of Germany at that time had thus produced a commemorative issue.
- The next commemorative coin and at the same time the last issue of a four-digit edition in mirror finish was only minted seven years later in 1964. However, this was not issued until March 14, 1966, another two years later. The commemorative coin for the “150. The anniversary of Johann Gottlieb Fichte's death ”had a circulation of 495,000 uncirculated and 5000 mirror-gloss copies. It was made by the Hamburg Mint.
In addition to the 87 commemorative issues of the Federal Republic of Germany in DM currency, there were 33 comparable issues as commemorative coins of the GDR. The majority of the GDR commemorative coins, however, had a lower mintage than the FRG commemorative coins of the same year. See also the list of GDR commemorative coins .
Replicas
Due to their rarity, the first five commemorative coins are sought-after collector's items . In contrast to the later millions of copies, there was a relatively low minting volume here, but there are re-mintings. The Deutsche Mark is no longer a means of payment, so re-minting is no longer a production of counterfeit money . Otherwise, this would be punished as a criminal offense under Section 146 StGB with a prison sentence . An unchanged but Nachprägung is a misdemeanor according to § 11 para. 1 no. 1 Coinage represents. Then the Imitation is of course except set or invalid coins that have become the Federal Republic of Germany allowed only if a notice is attached on the coin. Some re-mintings have a clearly recognizable year of the re-minting in addition to the original year of issue. If such an explicit note is missing, there is an administrative offense ( Section 12 (3) MünzG). Apart from the metal value or as a mere “placeholder” (specimen) for a non-existent original, re-mintings usually have no meaning for coin collectors.
Issues from 1967 to 2001
Between 1967 and 2001, 82 commemorative coins were minted. The diameter of all 5 DM coins was 29 mm and there were 38 issues. Of these, 23 were nominal values of five DM made of 625 silver, each weighing 11.2 grams; the remaining 15 motifs made from Magnimat weighed 10 grams per coin. Of 43 minted commemorative coins worth DM 10, 29 motifs were made of 625 silver, the others were made of sterling silver with a silver content of 92.5%. With a diameter of 32.5 mm, the mass of each coin was 15.5 grams.
Initiated by Klaus Ullmann , a series of five coins to help finance the 1972 Summer Olympics was started at the Bavarian Main Mint . It ended with the last issue on August 22, 1972. These coins had a face value of ten German marks for the first time. The total circulation was 100 million pieces; even today these are the commemorative coins with the highest mintage. In contrast to their predecessors, all editions were made by all four mints. The first of these Olympic coins with the motif of the ray spiral was inscribed in 1970 Games of the XX Olympiad 1972 in Germany . However, since it is not a country but a city that hosts the games, the description of the following editions in Munich has been changed. The first coin was minted a second time in 1972 with the new legend Games of the XX Olympiad 1972 in Munich .
The price of the material used until then exceeded the coin value from 1979 onwards due to the silver speculation at the time. A planned edition for Otto Hahn's 100th birthday, already embossed in silver, was therefore melted down again. This commemorative coin was new and, like later editions, minted in Magnimat, a shiny silver alloy, which is, however, far less valuable and contains no silver. A few copies of the silver rooster coin were issued; the exact number is not known. The silver version is recognizable by the placement of the embossing mark below the letters “AR” in the word “DEUTSCHE MARK”; in the Magnimat version it is a little further to the left under “MA”. There were a total of 15 different coins from Magnimat, the last one appeared in 1986 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Frederick the Great . This was also the last issue with a face value of five DM.
From 1987 coins with a nominal value of ten DM were issued, until 1997, as before, they consisted of 625 silver, then of 925 silver. The first of these coins commemorated the 750th anniversary of Berlin. There were two different issue days, all other commemorative coins were always issued on the same day. In Berlin it was April 30, 1987, and September 9, 1987 in the Federal Republic of Germany.
In 1992 the 125th birthday of Käthe Kollwitz and in 1998 the 900th birthday of Hildegard von Bingen were honored. These are the only two DM commemorative coins dedicated to women.
The issue of the commemorative coin for the 500th birthday of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon on February 13, 1997 was originally intended to be completely minted by the Hamburg Mint. In fact, the mirror-finish version was produced by all five federal German mints. This procedure was also retained for the subsequent silver DM coins: A mint received the major order for the version in uncirculated gloss, the collector's edition in mirror gloss went to all manufacturers in equal parts.
The last silver special issue in the DM currency was issued on September 5, 2001. The occasion was 50 years of the Federal Constitutional Court .
Gold coin 2001
Before the currency changeover to the euro, a DM coin made of almost pure gold was minted once in 2001 to commemorate the German mark: the so-called 1 DM gold mark . This gold coin was issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank. Since it is not this but the federal government that has the right to mint , a corresponding law on the issue of a 1 DM gold coin and the establishment of the Money and Currency Foundation had to be passed by the German Bundestag ( Federal Law Gazette 2000 I p. 2045 ).
The mass of the coin is 12.0 grams of fine gold (999.9 / 1000), it has a diameter of 23.5 mm and its design is largely similar to the old 1 DM course coin . One difference is the changed inscription Deutsche Bundesbank on the back (usually Federal Republic of Germany ).
A total of one million pieces were minted, each with 200,000 being divided between the five German mints. The gold coin is therefore available with the different mint marks A, D, F, G and J. The entire edition was sold from July 26, 2001 via the Deutsche Bundesbank , the state central banks and the sales point for collector coins at an issue price of 250 DM each .
The foundation received 100 million DM from the proceeds of the sale ; the remaining 84 million were given to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation to support the renovation of the Museum Island in Berlin.
In recent years, gold-plated 1 DM coins have often been offered in stores, but they can be distinguished from the commemorative issue by the inscription and the clearly different dimensions. There is also a re-stamping with a weight of 0.5 grams, which can also be distinguished from the original by the stamping of a year above the eagle.
Commemorative coins from 2002 (currency denomination euro)
2 euro commemorative coins
- For coins from other countries in the euro zone, see: 2 euro commemorative coins
Until 2012, every country that issues euro coins had the right to mint a limited number of euro 2 commemorative coins in addition to the regular euro 2 currency coins. From August 16, 2012, every member of the euro zone (i.e. not the small states linked by currency agreements) has the right to mint two 2 euro commemorative coins per year, whereby any joint expenses are not taken into account. These coins are made of the same materials as the usual circulation coins. The face of these commemorative coins differs from that of the course coin in order to enable the commemoration of certain events. Since these issues are intended for regular coin circulation, it is also a currency coin. The first of these coins was in Greece at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens issued.
The last minting order from the Deutsche Bundesbank for the original issue of the German 2-euro coin was given to the mint in Berlin before the euro was introduced in December 2001. No more coins of this face value were produced in the following four years. From July 15, 2005, only the current commemorative coins were issued. However, from 2008 onwards, normal coinage had to take place almost every year in addition to the federal state series; in 2010 and 2011 the number of coinage with the usual motif even exceeded that of the federal state series significantly. An exception to this were the specimens intended for coin sets with the original motif of the federal eagle, which continue to be minted annually for coin collectors (except in 2007, 2009 and 2012). However, normal coins are not included in the current coin sets from 2007, 2009 and 2012, as these were replaced by the respective community special editions ( 50 years of the Treaty of Rome , 10 years of European Economic and Monetary Union and 10th anniversary of the introduction of the euro).
Federal states series
In 2006, Germany began to issue 2 euro commemorative coins , each dedicated to the federal state holding the Federal Council Presidency at the beginning of the year of issue . A representative building or landmark of the respective federal state is depicted on the coins of the federal state series, which is intended to bring the federal structure of the Federal Republic of Germany closer to the citizens of Europe . The sequence of the presidencies of the Federal Council was changed from the 2017/18 financial year onwards due to the changed population figures. Schleswig-Holstein, to which the first commemorative coin was dedicated in 2006, took over the chairmanship on November 1, 2018 for 12 months - therefore the series could not be continued according to the original plan, but had to be adjusted. In 2019, the series instead honored the 70th anniversary of the constitutional body, the Bundesrat . A commemorative coin will have been minted for each of the 16 federal states by 2022.
The issue of the first coins of the new series with the motif of the Holsten Gate in Lübeck (Schleswig-Holstein) officially began on February 3, 2006 . Some of these coins came into circulation earlier - as did the first coins from the minting year 2008 with the Hamburg Michel motif in mid-September 2007, which were found in circulation more than four months before the official issue on February 1, 2008. The planned circulation of all 2 euro commemorative coins issued so far is 30 million each. Mirror-finish coins for collector's purposes in the current coin sets and in the newly created 2 euro commemorative coin set have a maximum mintage of 145,000 pieces per mint. The motifs of the commemorative coins from Saarland (2009) and Bremen (2010) were also used in the 1965 stamp series “ Capitals of the Federal Republic of Germany ”.
The federal states series is comparable to the American State Quarters , which have been issued every 73 days since 1999 and honor the 50 states and the overseas territories of the USA.

The first joint issue of a 2 euro commemorative coin by all euro countries took place in 2007 on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. The coins of the different countries have the same motif and only differ in the name of the country and the inscriptions in the respective language. In 2009 another coin appeared to mark the tenth anniversary of the European Economic and Monetary Union. The third joint issue was dedicated in 2012 to the tenth anniversary of the introduction of the euro as cash.
Germany and France honored the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty with a joint 2 euro commemorative coin, which only differs in the country code and the mint mark. Another joint edition is planned for 2022 to mark the 35th anniversary of the European Erasmus program .

Coins with a translucent plastic ring
5 euro commemorative coins
In 2016, a commemorative coin with a face value of five euros was issued for the first time in Germany. The coin bears the title “ Planet Earth ” and consists of three components: an outer ring, the inner core and an intermediate blue polymer ring that is partially translucent and was developed at the Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials at RWTH Aachen University .
The outer ring as well as the inner core consist of different copper-nickel alloys. The mass is 9.0 grams. The design comes from Stefan Klein . This novelty is produced in all five German mints, each with a slightly different shade of blue. The total mintage is 2,250,000 coins, 250,000 of them in mirror finish. The issue date was April 14, 2016.
In November 2016, due to the great demand for the new type of coin, the federal government decided to issue a five-part series of 5 euro commemorative coins from 2017 to 2021 with the theme “Earth's climate zones”. The start of this series was the “Tropical Zone” coin, issued on April 27, 2017. The coins in this series have the same diameter and the same mass as the 5 euro commemorative “Planet Earth” coin; they only differ in their motif and the color of the polymer ring, which is supposed to create an association with the respective climatic zone. Each of the five mints uses its own color.
Face value: 5 euros Material: copper - nickel materials, polymer ring - diameter: 27.25 mm - weight: 9.0 g - edge: smooth with inscription |

Silver coins / coins in a copper-nickel alloy
10 euro commemorative coins
On January 1st, 2002 the currency in Germany was changed from DM to Euro. Since then, up to 2007 five commemorative coins with a face value of ten euros have been issued; The 2006 vintage was an exception with four motifs. This series began with a coin on the occasion of the currency changeover. From 2003 to 2006, an additional 10 euro coin was minted annually on the occasion of the 2006 soccer World Cup in Germany.
All 10 euro coins minted up to 2010 are made of sterling silver. The coin weight of 18 g and the 925 alloy results in a fine weight of 16.65 g. The pure silver value of these coins is currently 10.95 euros ( silver price as of August 3, 2020). Due to the risk that the metal value could exceed the face value, the issue date of the last two 10 euro commemorative coins with this high silver content was brought forward to October 26, 2010. The fine weight of 16.65 grams of silver corresponds to that of a club thaler from 1857.
In 2011, the first 10 euro commemorative coin was issued in honor of Franz Liszt with a silver content reduced to 62.5% and a coin weight reduced to 16 g, with a fine weight of only 10 g silver. The other issues were issued in the normal version in a copper-nickel alloy, in the mirror finish version still in an alloy with a silver content of 62.5%.
These coins were available in the usual brilliant uncirculated finish (st) from many savings banks and some banks in Germany; Postbank was an exception. For collectors, a partial edition of each motif was produced in the quality Spiegelglanz (sp). This variant was initially only available from the Federal Securities Administration, in 2006 Deutsche Post took over the duties of the sales point for collector coins for the Federal Republic of Germany and sends all coins via its dispatch center in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . Some coin catalogs rate the issues in mirror finish differently than the official announcements of the federal government as Proof (Proof). In addition to the individual coins, the sales point for collector coins puts together a collection as a commemorative set of all silver coins of this year in a mirror finish.
Nominal value: 10 euros (50 pieces; issued from 2002 to 2010) Material: 92.5% fine silver, 7.5% copper - diameter: 32.5 mm - weight: 18 g |

Remarks
- ↑ The marginal writing of the first German euro commemorative coin issue, in which languages other than German and non-Latin characters were also used:
-
↑ a b c d The minting of the coins on the theme of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany was not originally announced. The place of manufacture is, however, the same as for the German 2-euro coins encoded in the marginal inscription: the sentence DIE WELT ZU GAST BY FRIENDS contains five times the letter E ; there are five mints in Germany. A middle bar of the E shortened by half marks the manufacturer:
- DI E WORLD TO MAKE FRIENDS: Berlin (A)
- THE W E LT TO MAKE FRIENDS: Munich (D)
- THE WORLD TO HOST B E I FRIENDS Stuttgart (F)
- THE WORLD'S GUEST AT FR E UNDEN: Karlsruhe (G)
- THE WORLD TIME TO MAKE FRIEND E N Hamburg (J)
For 2006 there was only the “G” stamp for Karlsruhe for the mirror finish quality level . This was rated negatively in some collectors' circles. Complete collectors of the football coins had to own ten copies each, one with normal and one with inverted marginal writing per mint; some scrapbooks therefore have gaps that cannot be filled.
The marking of the mint by a shortened middle bar of one of the letters E in UNITY AND RIGHT AND FREEDOM already existed with the 5 DM circulation coins, although there the mint was on the value side. This is also done with the German 2-euro coins, but the other way around: four E's have a shortened central bar , the E of the mint has three bars of equal length. -
↑ a b c So far, according to a press release from the Federal Ministry of Finance, three of these coins have been awarded by the American specialist publisher Krause Publications :
- 2005: FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 (Design: Lucia Maria Hardegen)
- 2005: Albert Einstein - 100 years of relativity, atoms, quanta (design: Heinz Hoyer)
- 2008: 125th birthday of the writer Franz Kafka (design: František Chochola)
- ↑ The mint mark is encoded in the margin inscription SPORT BEWEGT DIE WELT ADFGJ as Morse code for the corresponding letter: • - Berlin (A), - • • Munich (D), • • - • Stuttgart (F), - - • Karlsruhe (G ), • - - - Hamburg (J)
- ↑ The original announcement of the Federal Ministry of Finance of May 10, 2010 named “G” and “F” as mints. This was corrected on June 29, 2010.
- ↑ The originally planned issue date on November 11, 2010 has been brought forward due to the increased silver price.
- ↑ The originally planned issue date of November 25, 2010 has been brought forward due to the increased silver price.
- ↑ The coding of the mintmark within the coinage has not yet been officially announced. The mint mark can, however, be read in the jersey pattern, but an aid is required for this.
- ↑ To the silver coins are different from those better copper nickel, wear these the hallmark SILVER 625 . As a result, the coins had to be minted again with a mirror finish, which meant that the original issue date, May 5, 2011, could not be met.
-
↑ The mint is coded in the margin writing. It contains the letter S five times , four of which are without and one with serifs .

20 euro commemorative coins
In April 2015, the federal government decided to stop minting 10 euro commemorative coins made of a copper-nickel alloy and to replace them with 20 euro silver coins from 2016. These editions weigh 18 grams, are made from an alloy of 925 thousand parts silver (16.65 g) and 75 thousand parts copper ( sterling silver ) and have a diameter of 32.5 mm. They have the same dimensions and the same silver content as the 10 euro commemorative coins up to 2010, but are now issued at a face value of 20 euros. The 20 euro commemorative coin - like the 10 euro coin - corresponds again to the silver content of the Vereinstaler in the 19th century.
The silver commemorative coins from 2011 to 2015 were apparently unpopular with collectors and other interested parties because the silver content was lower and they could not be purchased at the specified face value, but only at a premium. On the other hand, the 20-euro coins in the simpler shiny uncirculated coinage are again available without a surcharge. The Ministry of Finance hopes that this will "stimulate the collectors' market". With the material value, which was around eight euros in June 2017, there was sufficient reserve at the time of the change. A development like 2010/2011, when the material value exceeded the nominal value of 10 euros because of the high silver price at the time, was not to be expected so quickly at the nominal value of 20 euros. However, the price of silver rose again significantly in summer 2020, so that the material value of the 20 euro coin rose to 12 to 13 euros in August 2020.
In 2017 the 20 euro series was continued with the motifs “Grimm's Fairy Tales: The Bremen Town Musicians”, “500 Years of Reformation”, “50 Years of German Sporthilfe ”, “200 Years of Invention of the Bicycle” and “300. Birthday of Johann Joachim Winckelmann ”.
The issue planned for 2019 on the subject of “100 Years of the Weimar Constitution” will be the first German commemorative coin to be issued in a three-color version.
Another five editions are planned for 2020: The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats (series "Grimms Märchen"), 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, 300th birthday of Freiherr von Münchhausen, European Football Championship 2020 (due to the postponement of the European Championship, the Coin not issued) and 900 years of Freiburg.
The series “Grimms Märchen” will be continued with the editions “The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats” (2020), “Frau Holle” (2021), “Rumpelstiltskin” (2022) and “Hans im Glück” (2023).
Nominal value: 20 euros (20 pieces so far, issued from 2016) Material: 92.5% fine silver, 7.5% copper - diameter: 32.5 mm - weight: 18 g |

25 euro commemorative coins
In October 2015, a commemorative coin with a face value of 25 euros was issued for the first time. The occasion of the issue was the 25th anniversary of German reunification . The motif of this coin comes from Bernd Wendhut and was awarded 2nd prize in a design competition for the 10 euro commemorative coin “20 Years of German Unity” in 2010. After the motif had already been used for the 2 euro commemorative coin, which was issued in 2015 for the occasion, the entire design was implemented accordingly. A new design competition did not take place.

50 euro gold coins
On August 31, 2016, the federal government decided to have a 50-euro gold coin “ Luther Rose ” minted and to issue it in the first half of 2017. Martin Luther's posting of the theses in 1517 marked the start of the Reformation - an event that had a decisive influence on world history in politics, religion, culture and society.

100 euro gold coins
Since the introduction of the euro in 2002, a gold coin with a face value of € 100 has been minted annually. All German 100 euro gold coins have a mass of 15.55 g (1/2 ounce), a diameter of 28 mm, a fluted edge and consist of 99.99% fine gold. They are produced exclusively in the stamping quality stamp gloss . These coins are legal tender in the Federal Republic of Germany; However, they are not in circulation, as their metal value is around 830 euros, which is significantly higher than the face value. The sale takes place only through the sales point for collector coins , banks and coin dealers must also order there.
The theme of the first gold coin issued in 2002 was the transition to monetary union and thus the introduction of the euro. In 2003 a series began with motifs from UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany. The topics are Quedlinburg (2003), Bamberg (2004), Classic Weimar (2006), Lübeck (2007), Goslar (2008), Cathedral and Church of Our Lady in Trier (2009), Würzburg Residence (2010), Wartburg (2011), Aachener Cathedral (2012), Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz (2013), Lorsch Abbey (2014), Upper Middle Rhine Valley (2015), Regensburg with Stadtamhof (2016), Eisleben and Wittenberg (2017) and Brühl (2018). The UNESCO World Heritage series ended in 2019 with Speyer as the 16th coin.
In 2005 there was an interruption in the series with a coin on the theme of the FIFA World Cup in Germany 2006 . In order to maintain continuity with the previously issued silver coins on the same theme, the previously minted image of the value side of all these coins was adopted. The proportions were adjusted, the nominal value changed from 10 to 100 euros and the monogram of the graphic artist Erich Ott added above. The motif side was designed by Heinz Hoyer , his monogram is present within the football shown. This is the only West German commemorative coin with two references to the designer.

In the first few years, the issue price was based on the gold price on the day before the issue plus a surcharge of 25 euros for the minting of the coin, so it was not yet fixed when pre-ordering. From 2011 to 2013 an issue surcharge of 50 euros was levied. In 2014, the price was set around six months before the coin was released. There is therefore no longer a fixed issue surcharge compared to the day before issue. The premium on the gold price on the day before the price was set was around EUR 68 in 2014, and around EUR 62 on the day of issue. In 2015, the surcharge was around 22 euros on the day before the price was set, and around 91 euros on the day of issue. In 2016, the surcharge on the day before the price was set was around 76 euros.
In addition to the surcharge, there are additional shipping costs per coin, which are always delivered individually; Until 2005, however, it was possible to collect an order in person in Bad Homburg. The scope of delivery includes an artificial leather case , the certificate of authenticity and the coin itself. The gold coin is in a transparent protective capsule. The shipping packaging in 2005 (13 × 25 cm) had a sticker with an indication of the dimensions accurate to half a gram. Since 2006, the original packaging has been delivered in an additional envelope measuring 41.5 × 35 cm.

Gold coins with red spots
Due to a production error, some German gold coins get red to brown spots over time. Investigations showed that these are silver compounds, v. a. Silver sulfide , which is formed when the coins are contaminated with silver. It is not clear how these impurities got into the production process. Until around February 2006, the Federal Securities Administration also exchanged older copies that had been rejected.
The resulting stains can be removed without residue using sodium cyanide, but the discoloration will reappear after a while.
Motif finding
From 1998 to 2011, the motifs on the coins were determined through competitions organized by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning . In 2012 this task was transferred to the Federal Office for Central Services and Unresolved Property Issues.
Numis leaves
In 1997 a Numisblatt was issued for the first time in cooperation with Deutsche Post AG . Underneath a protective capsule stuck on paper with the commemorative coin for the 500th birthday of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon is a sheet of ten stamps depicting Philipp Melanchthon ( Michel number 1902). The stamps were canceled by a first day cancellation . Since then there have been similar numismatic sheets for all of the following German silver coins.
Type of issue of the commemorative coins in mirror finish
The mirror-finish versions of the 5 DM commemorative coins were initially issued loosely in coin pockets. From 1969 to 1971 the commemorative coins were sealed in foil. This film contained plasticizers, which cause the coins to tarnish and build up verdigris. With the 5 DM commemorative coin for Albrecht Dürer's 500th birthday in 1971, vacuum packaging made of hard plastic with knobs, the so-called knob film, was introduced. The 10 DM commemorative coins for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich are an exception. These were minted between 1969 and 1972 and were also issued in the foil seal. From 1985 onwards, the dimpled foils also bear the golden imprint of a federal eagle and from 1997 the mint mark of the respective mint. With the changeover to 925 silver in 1998, in addition to the individually wrapped coins, a blister pack containing all five mints of an issue was introduced.
Since the currency reform in 2002, the 10 euro commemorative coins have been issued individually in coin capsules or in a blister pack with all coins from a given year.
Acceptance and awareness
Although between 8 and 13 million of the 10 euro commemorative coins have been issued annually since 2002, hardly any cash register has its own compartment, as most of these coins are in the hands of collectors and rarely get into circulation. Out of ignorance, many shops accept 10 euro coins only hesitantly or after consultation, although these coins are legal tender in the Federal Republic of Germany ( Section 2 (2) MünzG) and domestic businesses are obliged to accept them (up to an amount of 200 Euro, § 3 Abs. 1 MünzG). This problem existed before with the 5 and 10 DM commemorative coins. Foreign euro commemorative coins are not legal tender in Germany, with the exception of the special 2 euro coins that are also common there.
Material value of the gold coins
Because of the relatively low circulation and the production costs, the price of a German gold coin is higher than the material value. The gold coins of the Federal Republic of Germany have a fine gold content of 999.9 ‰. One troy ounce is 31.10 grams.
Nominal | Year of issue | Dimensions | Material value (€) 1 |
---|---|---|---|
1 DM | 2001 | 12.00 grams | 578.78 |
20 Euros | from 2010 | 3.89 grams (1/8 ounce) | 187.62 |

Performance and criticism
In the Federal Republic of Germany, over half a billion commemorative coins were minted in DM before the currency changeover to the euro. Apart from the first five DM 5 commemorative editions (with editions of 200,000 to 500,000), none of these commemorative coins saw any appreciable increase in value. Silver coins in the minting quality uncirculated are now generally traded at face value or material value (whichever is higher); Issues in mirror finish somewhat above the issue price. On the other hand, the Bundesbank exchanges the coins indefinitely, so that collectors do not suffer any loss of value if they have bought at face value (unlike in France, for example, where the 100 franc coins cost the equivalent of around 15 euros, but only one more after the exchange period has expired Have a silver value of around 7 euros (price as of October 2017) or some 20-mark commemorative coins from the GDR, which are now traded well below five euros).

Of all minted gold coins, the issue of 200 euros is traded at a price of around 2000 euros due to the low mintage (as of October 2017), making it the German denomination with the greatest increase in value since monetary union. Collectors also pay around 300 euros for the first 20 euro coin, which has roughly doubled its value. The market price of the other gold coins is usually slightly above the current gold price, with major deviations occurring in the first few months after issue, especially with newly released coins.
Criticism of the sales point for collector coins is expressed by complete collectors, as there is no gold coin edition comparable to the silver editions. When these coins are ordered by private individuals, specimens from a randomly selected mint will be delivered, and the order quantity may also be reduced. Traders, on the other hand, receive complete sets of coins and a confirmation of the delivery quantity in advance. Since 2019, the sales point for collector coins has promised that if five copies (i.e. a complete set) are allocated, one copy of each mint will be delivered. Since 2020 the former point of sale for collector coins has been operating under the name "Münze Deutschland".
