List of commemorative coins of the Federal Republic of Germany (DM)
From 1953 to 2001, the Federal Republic of Germany issued 87 commemorative coins with the currency denomination Deutsche Mark . With the exception of a gold commemorative coin, they consisted of silver alloys of different heights or Magnimat , a copper-nickel alloy. The grades of the embossing were stamp gloss (st) and mirror gloss (sp) ; Announcements by the Federal Government on coinage since 1997 contain figures on the proportion of mirror-finish coins.
The first five commemorative coins were issued over a period of 14 years. They had a very limited edition and are the most sought-after coins for collectors of the Deutsche Mark. Due to their rarity, there are various legally permitted imitations ( Section 11 of the Coin Act); however, they are meaningless to numismatists .
82 different motifs were minted in the following 34 years. At the beginning, the circulation was often over eight million copies based on the population of the Federal Republic of Germany. Over the years the amount was reduced to two million in the end. It is noteworthy that after the accession of the GDR in 1990, there was no increase in the number of copies, although the population of Germany and thus the number of coin collectors rose.
The commemorative coins with the highest mintage even today were issued on the occasion of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . There was a series with five motifs of 20 million pieces each. An embossing was made with two different motif sides: The first edition of the commemorative coin showed the symbol of the games, the spiral of rays with the wrong inscription games of the XX. 1972 Olympics in Germany . After the objection of the IOC President Avery Brundage , the second edition with the correct legend games of the XX. 1972 Olympics in Munich provided: The organization of the Olympic Games is never awarded to a country, but always only to a city.
The original material of the 5 DM commemorative coins was a silver alloy. When the price of material exceeded the coin value due to silver speculation , Magnimat was used from 1980. Some coins that had already been minted got into circulation, the rest were melted down. Commemorative coins with a face value of DM 10 were always made of silver alloys.
The only gold coin with the designation Deutsche Mark required a change in the law because it was issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank . Its dimensions corresponded to a normal 1 DM currency coin , but had the inscription Deutsche Bundesbank on the motif side . This gold coin had a face value of one Deutsche Mark; the issue price was 250 DM due to the material value. There are various gold-plated copies of the original 1 DM coin, which, however, are clearly distinguishable from the gold coin by the Federal Republic of Germany and are meaningless to coin collectors.
Embossing marks
The state-owned company Münze Berlin, which emerged from the former Berlin Mint during the GDR , has been shaping the State Mint of Berlin for the Ministry of Finance of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1990 . The mint mark, both historical and used today, is the "A" ; the first West German commemorative coin produced there shows the Brandenburg Gate .
The code letters of the German mints are: "A" ( Berlin ), "D" ( Munich ), "F" ( Stuttgart ), "G" ( Karlsruhe ) and "J" ( Hamburg ).
5 DM commemorative coins
Between 1953 and 1986 43 different 5 DM commemorative coins were minted, 28 of them in 625 silver.
Face value: 5 Deutsche Mark (28 pieces; issued from 1953 to 1979) Material: 62.5% silver, 37.5% copper - diameter: 29 mm - weight: 11.2 g |
