history

Gustav Weidanz was a German sculptor, medalist and university teacher. He was one of the founders of the art school in Halle, known under the name of the "Burg". He was the second teacher whom the director Paul Thiersch (1879–1928) called in 1915 to set up a sculpture class at the crafts and arts and crafts school in Halle in order to develop a new kind of art school. In 1920 Weidanz was appointed professor. Until a year after his retirement in 1958, he worked at the art college.

In his will of May 1, 1964, Gustav Weidanz named Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle as his heir. The purpose of the foundation was to promote young sculptors in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It was to be fulfilled by awarding a prize to sculptors who were not yet 30 years of age and who had their permanent residence in the German Democratic Republic. After reunification, the scope of the award was extended to the entire Federal Republic.
