Wolfgang Dreysse (born June 12, 1947 in Sömmerda ) is a German sculptor and university professor .

Life

From 1954 to 1966 Dreysse attended elementary school and the extended secondary school in Sömmerda. In 1966 he finished school with a high school diploma and qualified as a radio mechanic. In 1966 he began a six-year course of study at Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle , where he took the subjects "Technical Design" and "Wood Design" with Hans Brockhage and later " Wall Painting " with Lothar Zitzmann and " Sculpture " with Gerhard Lichtenfeld . After completing his studies, Dreysse worked freelance in Quedlinburg from 1972 . In 1975 he joined the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR district of Halle and in 1978 became a member of the “Sculptors Section”. From 1987 he belonged to the "Central Section Management (ZSL) Plastic".

His first work for public space was a fountain sculpture based on a fable for his study city Halle (Saale) , which was given its intended purpose in 1977. He devoted himself to a historical topic in 1978/79 when he also received an order from his place of residence in Quedlinburg, namely to create a bronze group of musicians representing the so-called "Munzenberg Musicians". This Bohemian and Hungarian refugees of the Thirty Years' War had on the coin mountain had become settle and were not allowed to trade and no trade operate, they therefore "beggar-musicians". Dreysse combined with his figure execution in timeless and neutral clothing the desire to maintain the musical tradition of the city. From 1982 to 1983, in just 14 months, he worked on a more recent historical topic: copper slate mining , which had come to an end in the Mansfeld region a few years earlier . The Knappenbrunnen was built in the pedestrian zone of Lutherstadt Eisleben on behalf of the Mansfeld Combine "Wilhelm-Pieck" . The casting work for the eight types of mining professions took place under the artist's supervision and with the assistance of the chasing in Hettstedt . During the years of political upheaval in the GDR , from about 1988 to 1992, Dreyssen was involved in a large number of other projects, for example in 1989 in Friedrichsbrunn for the new FDGB guest house or the city center of Halle-Neustadt , both of which were planned as early as 1983 were. The sculpture entitled Opening , which was erected in Hameln near the Marktkirche St.Nicolai in 1992 and is reminiscent of an advertising column pushed back together at its break point, has a direct reference to the reunification of Germany .

From 1991 to 1994 he was an artistic and scientific assistant at the architecture faculty of the TU Braunschweig under Jürgen Weber . From 1994 to 2012 he held a professor's position for Basics of Art / Sculpture at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle. On the occasion of his retirement from the active teaching body, he presented an exhibition of his own works along with works by his students in the Museum Schloss Bernburg in September / October 2012 . The materials used in his - in relation to the sculptures in public space - small-format works are metal, wood, ceramics and plaster . He also makes prints and drawings.

His last work of the large or towering kind that made him famous is the trilogy of bronze ensembles in Sömmerda. All three works of art fall under the category of "playable street furniture". The first group of sculptures, called Pamona , was presented to the public in 2010, the second with the name Fortuna-Brunnen four years later, and again four years later, i.e. in 2018, the Minerva scenario, which is currently being worked on, is to be added to the eponymous scenario as a two-meter-high goddess of wisdom will also come up with the Sömmerda-born pedagogue Christian Gotthilf Salzmann . A book about all three art objects and their connection to the city's history is also to be published.

Wolfgang Dreysse has been married to Roswitha Dreysse, a qualified painter and painting restorer , since 1970 . In addition to their professions, both also run a gallery in Quedlinburg.

Quotes

“Plastic is important in architecture, and plastic has to be touched and used. People don't just want to see plastic with their eyes, but also with their hands - an important criterion for plastic to function. My "Four Musicians" on the Quedlinburg market square have become real climbing sculptures for children, the musicians' heads sometimes shine from being touched. Plastic and lots of green are particularly important in new development areas so that people feel comfortable, so that they can realize their needs for a variety of sensory impressions. "

- Wolfgang Dreysse : newspaper interview, 1984

“My interests are: the interrelationships between architecture and sculpture in public spaces, the aesthetic and content-related expressiveness of the most diverse natural and artificial materials, the emotional effect of color on the three-dimensional form, the plastic tectonics and structure characteristic of the respective material processing process, sculptural to the same extent as a sculptural approach to the form, artistic design and perception theories.
