Radebeul traditional railway
The Traditionsbahn Radebeul e. V. (TRR) is an association of railway enthusiasts based in Radebeul , Saxony . It was the first organized association in what was then the GDR that was dedicated to the operational and museum preservation of historic narrow-gauge railway vehicles. He has been the operator of the traditional trains on the Radebeul Ost – Radeburg narrow-gauge railway since 1974 .
history
Today's Radebeul e. V. in a group of railway enthusiasts who began collecting and processing the last remaining two-axle Saxon narrow-gauge wagons in 1967. These wagons intended for retirement had been transferred to Radebeul Ost by an employee of the wagon management department of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in order to ensure that they were preserved in a museum. The Dresden Transport Museum added these vehicles to its museum holdings and they were presented to the public for the first time in June 1968.
The railway friends finally organized themselves in a working group of the German Model Railway Association (DMV). A great success for the railway enthusiasts were the traditional journeys introduced on August 10, 1974 with the last remaining passenger coaches of the Saxon narrow-gauge railways . This was the first time there was a regular museum train service on the territory of the GDR, which from then on enjoyed great popularity.
In order to continue to ensure the traditional operation, AG 3/58 "Traditionsbahn Radebeul-Radeburg" of the DMV was founded on December 19, 1974. The vehicles used for the traditional operation remained in the DR company park, which also had any repairs and general inspections carried out. The inoperable museum vehicles set up at Radebeul Ost train station, however, were still part of the Dresden Transport Museum's inventory.
A completely new situation only arose after the political change in eastern Germany in 1989 . If the traditional trains had been well used so far, there has now been a rapid drop in passenger numbers. The working group broke away from the DMV and founded a registered association in 1990. In the 1990s, the association also tried to take over the vehicles used in the traditional business. In 1993, two locomotives were borrowed from the DR to replace the exhibits that had been sold, so that they could be placed in front of the museum train on Ladestrasse. A diesel locomotive, required for shunting operations, came from the Schmiedeberg foundry's connecting line as the first operational machine owned by the association.
In November 1993 the association hosted the first annual meeting of the Association of German Museum and Touristic Railways (VDMT).
The transport policy of Deutsche Bahn (successor to the Deutsche Reichsbahn from 1994) as the owner of the Radebeul Ost – Radeburg line is not geared towards continuing to operate the narrow-gauge railways in Germany. It was therefore necessary to found an independent railway company (EVU) in 1997 . In 2000, some of the vehicles previously used in the traditional company were finally taken over. Seven passenger cars and a few freight cars as well as three steam locomotives have been owned by the Traditionsbahn Radebeul eV since then. This basic inventory was finally supplemented by further new acquisitions.
Since 2009, the traditional Radebeul railway, as the operating railway company, has been responsible for the rebuilt facilities at Wilsdruff station .
In 2015 the 50th anniversary of the traditional company was celebrated with a festival weekend. In addition to the vehicles of the association, numerous vehicles from the IG Verkehrsgeschichte Wilsdruff and the museum train from the Dresden Transport Museum were used. The highlight was the simultaneous use of both steam locomotives of the traditional railway association, before the IV K No. 176 had to be shut down due to the expiry of the statutory operating periods.
Until the termination of the long-term rental agreement in 2017, the association was based in the former goods handling facility at Radebeul Ost station. Today the office is located on the site of the former Niederlößnitz power station , where a workshop for car repairs is also available.
