Gerhard Lichtenfeld (born November 6, 1921 in Halle (Saale) ; † November 6, 1978 there ) was a German artist.

Life

Lichtenfeld studied law at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Halle between 1942 and 1945 . He had previously lost his left forearm after an accident on the labor service. Nonetheless, throughout his entire life as a sculptor, he tried to cope with all manual activities as far as possible on his own. From 1945 to 1946 he was a construction worker before he began a six-year course at the Institute for Artistic Design in Burg Giebichenstein in 1946 . He completed his studies under Gustav Weidanz in 1952 with a diploma as a sculptor, and then worked as his assistant until 1956. In 1955/56 he spent several weeks at the Munich Art Academy in order to perfect his knowledge of the lost wax process for bronze casting .

After two more years as senior assistant, he was appointed head of the sculpture class in 1959. Until he was awarded the professorship in 1966, he worked as a lecturer in this class. After Lichtenfeld received the National Prize of the GDR in 1974 , study trips took him to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In 1977 he was appointed full professor. He belonged to the GDR bloc party LDPD .

Lichtenfeld worked almost exclusively for bronze casting. Much of his work was cast by himself in the college's own foundry. His students received a well-founded training in design as well as craftsmanship. At the same time he worked as a medalist . He was a worthy successor to Gustav Weidanz, who founded the Hallesche Medaillenschule, which is still active today in the 4th and 5th generation of students.

On November 6, 1978, his 57th birthday, Gerhard Lichtenfeld died in his hometown of Halle (Saale) . In his honor, the city named a Gerhard-Lichtenfeld-Weg .

Gerhard Lichtenfeld already had solo exhibitions in Halle (Saale) , Bad Kösen , Mosigkau , Erfurt and Potsdam during his lifetime . He also took part in all major art exhibitions in the GDR and the Halle district, as well as in Berlin , Gotha , Magdeburg and Naumburg (Saale) . In addition, his work has been presented abroad, including in Cairo , Middelheim, Moscow , New Delhi , Tallinn and Visby . In addition, exhibition trips took him to Bulgaria , France and Hungary .
