The Golden Fox (Slovenian Zlata lisica ) is a traditional women's ski race in Maribor , Slovenia , which has been held since 1964. Usually there is a giant slalom and a slalom , which are each counted for the Alpine Ski World Cup . In addition, the athlete receives with the best overall time both races a trophy in the form of a fox from gold .
The World Cup races are held above the town of Maribor on the Bacher Mountains ( Pohorje in Slovenian ) and attract thousands of spectators every year. They are among the classics of women's skiing: after Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val-d'Isère , Maribor has hosted the largest number of women's competitions in the history of the World Cup.
In a few years it had to be moved to other places because of the snow conditions. The races took place in Bad Gastein in 1974 , in Sarajevo in 1975 and in 1976, 1988, 1991, 2007 and 2012 in Kranjska Gora , the organizer of the traditional men's World Cup races for the Vitranc Cup . In 1998 and 2011 there were cancellations and the races for the Golden Fox were canceled without replacement.
The only World Cup Super G in Maribor was won by Hilde Gerg from Germany in 1999 . It did not count towards the overall ranking for the Golden Fox and was originally intended to be driven on New Year's Day. However, due to the weather, the race was postponed to January 2nd and took place on the same day as the giant slalom.
The most successful participant is Vreni Schneider from Switzerland . She won eight races in Maribor and Kranjska Gora and won the Golden Fox seven times.
