Staufen Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The races for the Staufen Cup were international alpine ski races that were held in Oberstaufen in Bavaria from 1962 to 1992 .

In 1962 a women's slalom was staged for the first time , and from 1963 a giant slalom and a combination rating calculated from both disciplines. Until 1966, the competitions had the status of FIS -A races, the highest racing class at that time, and were held from 1967 as part of the newly created World Cup . In contrast to the individual races, the combined ranking was not part of the World Cup. Since the races traditionally took place on the first or second weekend in January, the competitions in 1967 were the first ever women's World Cup races. Until 1969, slalom and giant slalom were skied on different slopes. The slalom took place on the Staufner Berg , which is located near Oberstaufenand the giant slalom at the Hündlekopf just outside. For technical and organizational reasons, both competitions were held at the Hündle from 1970 onwards.

In 1973 and 1974, there were no World Cup races for the first time, but European Cup races in Oberstaufen. In 1975 the Staufen Cup was supposed to be held again as a women's World Cup race, but due to lack of snow the races had to be moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grindelwald . In 1976, the men drove in Oberstaufen for the first time as part of the European Cup. From 1977, when the Women's World Cup was back in Oberallgäu , only one competition - slalom or giant slalom - was held each year. In 1978, 1980 and 1981 - 1979 there were no races for the first time - World Cup races for men were held in Oberstaufen, in 1982 and after a three-year break until 1986 World Cup races for women. In 1989 the World Cup was to take place again in Oberstaufen, but due to lack of snow, the competitions - as well as the European Cup races planned for 1990 - had to be canceled. In 1992 the Staufen Cup was held for the last time in the form of a women's World Cup giant slalom. The implementation of further races failed due to the requirements of the International Ski Federation FIS , which prescribed snowmaking systems for World Cup locations.
