biography

Nagel was born the younger of two daughters of the Olympic ski racer Jack Nagel (1926-2004). When the family lived in Skykomish , they learned to ski. In 1962 operations began in Crystal Mountain and her father took over the management of the ski school and the racing program there, which is why the family moved to Enumclaw .

At the age of 16, Nagel took part in the 1968 Winter Olympics. Just a few weeks earlier, she traveled to Europe with the then 18-year-old Kiki Cutter to qualify for participation. Nagel finished 8th and 6th in the two World Cup races immediately before the games. Then she led the Olympic slalom in Chamrousse after the first run with eight hundredths of a second ahead. The US ski team took four of the first six places. However, three of the other US drivers were disqualified for missing goals. Nagel also made a mistake in the second run and was disqualified. Two days later she reached 12th place in the giant slalom as the best US finisher.

Back in the US, Nagel won the US slalom and combination championships in Crystal Mountain. A few weeks later she got her first podium at the World Cup in Heavenly Valley . In 1969, when she was only 17, she won her first World Cup race in Sterzing (Italy). In the course of her Ski World Cup career, which lasted only three years , Nagel was able to win three races. There are also two second places and seven third places. In the overall ranking of the 1969/70 season, she finished sixth. In March 1970, she resigned at the age of 18 and never took part in world championships.
