Edith Zimmermann (born November 1, 1941 in Lech am Arlberg ) is a former Austrian ski racer . In the 1960s she won numerous international races and won the silver medal in the downhill at the 1964 Winter Olympics .

biography

Edith Zimmermann learned to ski at the age of six, her sister Heidi , who is around four and a half years younger , also became a ski racer. Her great talent quickly became apparent and she was accepted into the renowned Arlberg Ski Club . She celebrated her first successes in junior races, became Austrian junior champion in combination in 1960, won the giant slalom in Seefeld in the same year and achieved several other podium places.

In the winter of 1960/61, the Zürserin was accepted into the A-squad of the Austrian Ski Association , again achieved a few podium finishes and won the traditional Zürsersee giant slalom in her home town. In the next winter she won the giant slalom in Spittal as well as the third places in the downhill and combination of Val Gardena and in the slalom of St. Moritz , but she was only a substitute runner at the 1962 World Cup and never competed . Shortly afterwards she celebrated two more victories in the giant slalom and in the combination at the Coppa Grischa in Lenzerheide . In the 1962/63 season Zimmermann won the slalom and the combination on the Axamer Lizum near Innsbruck , the downhill in Davos , the giant slalom from Bad Hindelang and all three giant slalom of the three-slope races in Arosa . With numerous other podium places, including second place in the downhill of the Arlberg-Kandahar races , she was even the best runner of the season overall.

Zimmermann celebrated her greatest success at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck: In the descent, she took the lead with start number 11 ahead of Traudl Hecher and was then only beaten by Christl Haas . Thus, the then 22-year-old won the silver medal in the downhill and with fifth place in the slalom and sixth in the giant slalom also the bronze medal in the combination, which only counted as a world championship medal. After the games, she won the giant slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , the giant slalom in Åre, and slalom, giant slalom, downhill and combined in Gällivare .

In the winter of 1964/65 Zimmermann won the giant slalom of the SDS races in Grindelwald as well as the downhill and combination of Villard-de-Lans and was Austrian champion in slalom and combination. In the gold key races she came second in the downhill and third in the combination. In the 1965/66 season she contested her last races and achieved two second places in the giant slalom and in the Grindelwald descent. Zimmermann ended her career on January 17, 1966 and soon afterwards married the building contractor Walter-Heinz Rhomberg in Bregenz and has three children. She got involved in an aid project in Albania .
