Jean Marlene Saubert (born May 1, 1942 in Roseburg , Oregon , † May 14, 2007 in Bigfork , Montana ) was an American ski racer .

Life

Saubert was originally from Oregon. The skiing she learned in the ski resort of McCall ( Idaho ). In the mid-1960s, she was briefly the dominant driver of the US ski association. In 1963 she was American champion in downhill and giant slalom . The following year she won all four titles at the national championships.

She first drew international attention at the 1962 World Ski Championships in Chamonix , when she finished sixth in the giant slalom. In the following years she achieved numerous victories in international races. Among other things, these were downhill, slalom and combination of the Harriman Cup in Sun Valley in 1963 and the giant slalom of the Silver Belt in Sugar Bowl and, in the winter of 1963/64, giant slalom and combination for the criterion of the first snow in Val-d'Isère , the slalom of the Staufen Cup in Oberstaufen , the giant slalom of the SDS races in Grindelwald and the slalom of the Silberkrugrennen in Bad Gastein . Saubert celebrated her greatest successes in February 1964 at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . There she fought a tough competition with the two French sisters Marielle and Christine Goitschel . Ultimately, Saubert had to admit defeat to the two French women in the slalom and won the bronze medal. In the giant slalom, she took second place at the same time as Christine Goitschel. Shortly after the Olympic Games, she won the slalom of the Arlberg-Kandahar race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the winter of 1965 she won the Silver Belt for the second time since 1963. In 1966 she was fourth in slalom at the World Championships in Portillo, Chile .

After the end of the world championship, Saubert withdrew from active competitive sport. She graduated from Oregon State University in 1964 and has since studied at the private Brigham Young University . Saubert then worked for more than three decades as a primary school teacher and as a ski instructor.
