The Swiss Performance Index (SPI) is, along with the Swiss Market Index (SMI), the most highly regarded share index in Switzerland . It is calculated and published by SIX Swiss Exchange . The SPI includes almost all listed Swiss stock corporations . It is therefore the overall market index for the Swiss stock market . The SPI is divided into numerous sub-indices according to sectors and capitalization . Together, these indices make up the SPI family. The title universe of the SPI family currently comprises 213 shares (as of January 4, 2019).
Base date
The SPI has been calculated since June 1, 1987. On this date (base date) the index level was set at 1000 points.
Consideration of dividends
The SPI is a dividend-adjusted share index (total return index). This means that dividend payments are taken into account in the index development. The index divisor is adjusted for each dividend payment . - However, there is also a non-dividend-adjusted variant (price index) of the SPI.
Title universe
According to the SPI index regulations, the SPI includes all stocks that are primarily listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange , with two exceptions:
- Stocks with a freely tradable proportion ( free float ) of less than 20% are not included in the SPI due to their limited liquidity (tradability).
- Investment companies are not included in the SPI to avoid double counting. Only if an investment company invests exclusively in companies that are not primarily listed on the SIX can it be included in the SPI at its own request.
Only equities of Swiss companies with basically juridical registered office in Switzerland or in the Principality of Liechtenstein included in the SPI. Upon request, a primarily listed company domiciled abroad can be admitted if it meets certain conditions with regard to reporting obligations under stock corporation law.
