The company was created in 1969 through the merger of R. + E. Huber AG in Pfäffikon Zurich and Suhner & Co. AG in Herisau. The corporation R. + E. Huber in Pfäffikon was founded in 1882. It was originally a telegraph wire and cable factory and also operated as a rubber and gutta-percha goods factory. Suhner & Co. AG, founded in 1864, built on cable and cable insulation as well as a plastic pressing plant with injection molding processing.

The internationalization of Huber + Suhner began with the expansion to Australia in 1974 and in 1999 the company was already present in 28 countries. In 2002 the company concentrated on realigning the 3x3 strategy - 3 technologies for 3 main markets and withdrew from the non-core businesses. In 2011 Huber + Suhner opened production in Changzhou, China. At the end of December 2012, the US company Astrolab, based in Warren, New Jersey, was taken over. With the acquisition of Cube Optics in Mainz, Huber + Suhner further expanded its position in fiber optics in 2014. At the end of May 2016, Huber + Suhner took over the English-American company Polatis, a provider of purely optical switches that, unlike conventional electrical / optical switches, do not convert the signals, but control them optically. The Polatis portfolio is an addition to the existing Huber + Suhner product range, especially in the area of the data center market. In spring 2019, the Bus & Train Antennas division was taken over by Kathrein Werke.

On September 30, 2019, the German BKtel Group, which includes three locations in Germany and majority holdings in two companies in France and Japan, was taken over. With the takeover, Huber + Suhner expanded its portfolio in the areas of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), hybrid fiber coax (HFC) and distributed access architecture (DAA) as well as optical signal processing (optical converters, amplifiers and fiber laser).
