William Harris "Bill" Stewart (* 18th October 1966 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Stewart, who comes from a musical family, has been playing drums since he was seven. He studied at the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls , where he played in the orchestra as well as in various jazz and marching bands. From 1986 to 1988 he studied at William Patterson College with Dave Samuels , Rufus Reid and Harold Mabern . Here he met Joe Lovano and made his first recordings with Scott Kreitzer and Armen Donelian .

In 1988 he went to Brooklyn . Here he worked a. a. in a trio with Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein . He worked on several Maceo Parker albums , was a member of John Scofield's band from 1990 to 1995 and replaced Adam Nussbaum in a new edition of the John Scofield Trio with Steve Swallow . At the turn of the millennium he played in a trio with Pat Metheny and Larry Grenadier . With Kevin Hays and Larry Goldings he founded the Bill Stewart Trio.
