The SFS Group AG is a company for mechanical fastening systems and precision components. The head office is in Heerbrugg , Switzerland. In 2018, SFS employed over 10,000 people worldwide and achieved sales of CHF 1.74 billion.

history

SFS has its origins in the Stadler hardware store founded in Altstätten in 1928 . In 1949 a branch was opened in nearby Heerbrugg. Motivated by supply bottlenecks, Josef Stadler and Hans Huber decided to set up their own screw production and together founded SFS Presswerk AG in 1960. The production was carried out by cold forming (also known as cold massive forming ).

Both the trading and manufacturing activities were continuously expanded in the following decades. From 1971 the company built up an international network of market organizations. In 1993 the activities were brought together under the umbrella of SFS Holding AG, and in 2014 the name was changed to SFS Group AG. Today the activities are divided into the three segments Engineered Components, Fastening Systems and Distribution & Logistics.

While the trade and logistics area remained largely oriented towards Switzerland (Distribution & Logistics), the manufacturing area today comprises around 70 sales and / or production locations (Engineered Components and Fastening Systems) worldwide. Through various acquisitions, SFS was able to expand its competence portfolio to include plastic injection molding technology, deep drawing and blind riveting technology (through the takeover of the GESIPA Group).

On September 1, 2012, SFS took over the Singapore- based Unisteel Technology Group, which is active in the field of miniature fasteners (e.g. for cell phones and hard drives) and has production facilities in Malaysia and China. SFS thus became a supplier to the screws of the iPhone from Apple . SFS produces its own miniature screws, which with a diameter of 0.5 mm are among the thinnest in the world, but lost market share due to the continuous migration of the mobile phone industry. With the acquisition of the Unisteel Technology Group, SFS consolidated its position in its market segment. With the construction of another plant in Nansha (CN), the company increases screw production in Asia.

SFS has been listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange since May 7, 2014 (ticker symbol SFSN).

With the acquisitions of Stamm (Switzerland) and Tegra Medical (USA) carried out in 2016, SFS expanded its position in the growing medical technology industry. This gives SFS access to a large, largely complementary portfolio of customers.

The claim “Inventing success together” was introduced in 2018 and functions as a new summary of the SFS DNA, which has existed since the foundation. In this context, the brands SFS intec and SFS unimarket are merging and appearing as SFS.

Corporate structure

SFS is divided into three operating segments, which represent the three business models:

  • Engineered Components: Customer-specific precision components, fastening systems and assemblies with the brands SFS intec, Unisteel and Tegra Medical.
  • Fastening Systems: Application-optimized, mechanical fastening and strap systems with the brands SFS intec and GESIPA
  • Distribution & Logistics: Assortments in line with the market and innovative logistics solutions with the SFS unimarket brand

The three operating segments are supported by the cross-sectional functions Technology and Services, which ensure the use of synergies and an efficient transfer of know-how.

Based on the core technologies of cold forming , deep drawing , plastic injection molding technology and blind riveting technology, the SFS Group supplies various sales markets. These include the automotive, construction, fittings, electrical, electronics and aviation industries as well as medical technology.

Apprentices at SFS

SFS has always invested heavily in training its own offspring. The most important element is the promotion of young people through vocational training. In Switzerland in particular, dual training is very important. Around 160 apprentices are being trained in ten professions - this corresponds to almost 7% of the entire Swiss workforce. Worldwide, the proportion of apprentices in the SFS Group is around 2.5%.
