The Burckhardt Compression Holding AG , based in Winterthur , is an international manufacturer of piston compressors .

The group of companies employs around 2,600 people and has its own subsidiaries in 21 countries and agencies in over 80 countries. In the 2019 financial year, the company generated sales of around 629.6 million Swiss francs. Since June 2006, Burckhardt Compression Holding on the Swiss Exchange's SWX Swiss Exchange listed .

Field of activity

Burckhardt Compression's field of activity mainly includes the manufacture of labyrinth piston compressors , process gas compressors, hyper compressors and fuel gas compressors. Burckhardt Compression is the only manufacturer in the world who produces all four types of compressors.

These are used in the chemical , petrochemical , refinery , air separation and gas transport and storage sectors and are required to convert gases - e.g. B. hydrocarbon gases or industrial gases - to compress , cool or liquefy .

history

The company was founded in 1844 as a mechanical workshop by Franz Burckhardt in Basel. Under the direction of his son, August Burckhardt, the Burckhardt machine factory began building compressors and vacuum pumps in 1878 and subsequently specialized in this area.

In 1969 the Burckhardt machine works became part of Sulzer AG , creating a second location in Winterthur. In 2000, all business activities in Winterthur were merged and the Basel location was closed. In 2001 the head office was also relocated to Winterthur.

In June 2002 the company became independent through a management buyout and renamed Burckhardt Compression AG. At the same time, the group of companies gave itself a holding structure with the establishment of Burckhardt Compression Holding AG. In June 2006 the company went public through an IPO .

In December 2015, Burckhardt Compression acquired a 40% stake in Arkos Field Services, based in Houston, Texas, a provider of services and components in the field of gas compression. With this investment, the company gains greater access to the American market. In November 2019, Burckhardt Compression took over the remaining 60% of Arkos.

In March 2016, Burckhardt Compression acquired a majority stake in Shenyang Yuanda Compressor, the leading manufacturer of reciprocating compressors in China. Dun is thereby gaining local market proximity and expanding its portfolio to cover various market needs.

In September 2016, IKS Industrie- und Kompressorenservice GmbH, based in Bremen, took over and in June 2017 Burckhardt Compression increased its presence in Canada and took over CSM Compressor Supplies & Machine Work Ltd, based in Edmonton and Drumheller, Alberta.

In March 2020, Burckhardt Compression will take over the global compressor business from The Japan Steel Works.
