The name Burckhardt ( pronounced Basle German : ˈbʊʁgət ) is a family name , especially of a Basel patrician family .

The progenitor of the Basel patrician family was the cloth and silk merchant Christoph (Stoffel) Burckhardt (1490–1578) from the Münstertal in the Black Forest , who became a Basel citizen in 1523 and a member of the Grand Council in 1553 , in which the family remained uninterrupted until the 20th century was represented.
