Theophil Burckhardt-Biedermann (born January 18, 1840 in Gelterkinden ; † May 26, 1914 in Basel ) was a Swiss historian and teacher .

Life

Theophil Burckhardt-Biedermann was born on January 18, 1840 in Gelterkinden. He was one of nine children of Abel Burckhardt and Julia Veronika Burckhardt (née Miville), but not all of them reached adulthood. Burckhardt-Biedermann, I grew up in a Christian environment and kept his faith all his life. Burckhardt-Biedermann spent the first ten years of his life with his parents in the rectory in Gelterkinden, where his father had been a pastor since 1839 . He himself later described the parental household as tightly economically limited.

When Burckhardt-Biedermann switched to high school in 1850, he moved to Basel to live with his uncle Immanuel Stockmeyer and his aunt Esther Valerie Burckhardt. Here, too, he remained in a religious environment, because his uncle was a pastor in St. Martin's Church . Four years later the father became a senior helper in Basel, so that Burckhardt-Biedermann returned to the household of his parents and siblings. In the spring of 1858 Burckhardt-Biedermann began studying classical philology at the University of Basel , and after five semesters he moved to the University of Bonn. He spent the winter of 1861/62 in Berlin . Burckhardt-Biedermann returned home in 1862, where he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the rhetorician Caecilius and graduated magna cum laude .

After completing his studies, Burckhardt-Biedermann worked as a teacher at various schools in Basel, the subjects being varied. He taught a. a. Geography, history, German and French. In 1866 Burckhardt-Biedermann got his first permanent job at a public school, at the Realgymnasium . Two years later he got a job at the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz , where he initially taught various subjects. Later he taught only German, Latin and Greek.

On July 11, 1867, he married Clara Biedermann (born March 24, 1845) from Zurich , daughter of the Zurich theology professor Alois Emanuel Biedermann (1819–1885), with whom he had two sons, Paul and Max Burckhardt. Of these, he in turn had a total of six grandchildren. Clara and Theophil Burckhardt-Biedermann remained married for 36 years until Clara died on March 12, 1903 after a long illness. After the death of his wife, Burckhardt-Biedermann moved in with his younger son Max and his wife Anna Maria Ecklin.

In 1905 Burckhardt-Biedermann had to give up his teaching post for health reasons due to neurasthenia . In his newfound free time, he began to concentrate on his former part-time work, archaeological studies. He dealt intensively with Augusta Raurica .

Burckhardt-Biedermann died on May 26, 1914 at the age of 74.

Burckhardt-Biedermann's estate did not come to the Basel University Library until 1956 , together with the estate of his son Paul Burckhardt (1873–1956) and other family members. The handover took place through the mediation of Erich Gruner , who was married to a granddaughter of Theophil Burckhardt-Biedermann.

In the course of his archaeological studies he dealt intensively with Augusta Raurica, which is why he was also appointed to the Commission for the Conservation of Historical Art Monuments . He was also a corresponding member of the Imperial German Archaeological Institute in Rome . Burckhardt-Biedermann was significantly involved in the creation of the Vindonissa Museum . Publications (selection)

Although trained as a classical philologist, Burckhardt-Biedermann hardly published in this area after completing his dissertation. His interests, which he indulged in alongside his school office, went in other directions. His first monograph deals with his own institution, the history of the high school in Basel. He also dealt with the Reformation and the humanism of his hometown and published, for example, a study on Bonifacius Amerbach and his relationship to the recently introduced Reformation in Basel. For this work he received an honorary doctorate in theology in 1910 on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the University of Basel . Most of Burckhardt-Biedermann's publications, on the other hand, deal with archeology, especially with Augusta Raurica , where he led the excavations since 1878 on behalf of the historical and antiquarian society in Basel - which acquired the archaeologically valuable site in 1884 - for example at the ancient one City wall or at the theater, as well as research on the Kaiseraugst castle .
