Albrecht Burckhardt

Albrecht Eduard Burckhardt (born July 13, 1853 in Basel ; † December 2, 1921 there ) was a Swiss hygienist and medical historian.

Life

The son of the doctor August Burckhardt studied medicine at the universities of Basel , Tübingen and Göttingen . In 1878 he received his doctorate from Hermann Immermann in Basel. In 1882 he received his habilitation in hygiene and toxicology and from then on worked as a private lecturer at the University of Basel. In 1892 he took over the newly created chair for hygiene as an associate professor . In 1894 he was appointed full professor and head of the new Hygiene Institute at the University of Basel. In 1905 he was rector of the University of Basel.

Burckhardt's specialties were healthy drinking water and school hygiene . He was one of the founders of historical demography in Switzerland. Burckhardt also published on the history of medicine and the university in his hometown.

Albrecht Burckhardt was married from 1884.
