Christoph Burckhardt

Christoph Burckhardt (born June 13, 1631 in Basel ; † July 24, 1705 there ) was a Swiss politician.

Life

Christoph Burckhardt had a political career in his hometown. In 1648 he was accepted into the Basel chancellery , and in 1654 he became a conductor at the castle. In 1660 he was elected to the Grand Council , in 1662 he became a council substitute in the chancellery. In 1664 he was elected to the Small Council . From 1666 until the end of his life in 1705 he was a member of the Council of Thirteen, the city’s closer government. In 1683 he became chief guild master (second highest office after the mayor). In 1691 he was violently attacked during unrest, the so-called 1691 creature, because of the activities of his wife Salome, née Schönauer , and had to temporarily relinquish his offices.
