from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salome Burckhardt-Schönauer (* 1640 in Basel ; † July 2, 1691 ibid) was married to the thirteen-man and later chief guild master Christoph Burckhardt . She tried to influence elections and political decisions with gifts and agreements. On the occasion of the unrest of 1691, the so-called 1691 creature, she was condemned to symbolize the old regime defamed as the «women's regiment» and to a heavy fine and four years of house arrest. She died before the end of the unrest, while her husband, who had since been deposed and who had benefited most from her activities, was restored to office and dignity.
