Friedrich Burckhardt

Karl Friedrich Burckhardt (also Fritz Burckhardt ; born December 27, 1830 in Sissach ; † February 3, 1913 in Basel ) was a Swiss mathematician , headmaster and politician .

Life

Friedrich Burckhardt was a son of the Basel governor Johannes Burckhardt and his wife Lucie, née Jacot.

Burckhardt studied mathematics and physics at the Universities of Basel , Geneva , Karlsruhe and Berlin , worked as a grammar school teacher in Basel from 1852, became rector of the trade school in 1869 , of the secondary school in 1870 and was rector of the humanistic grammar school in Basel from 1875 to 1902 . In addition, he worked as a private lecturer and associate professor at the University of Basel from 1868 onwards .

He was involved in local politics for 34 years as the liberal-conservative councilor of the canton of Basel-Stadt , was involved in the social sector and for gymnastics and was an education councilor from 1902 to 1908.

Friedrich Burckhardt's numerous publications include studies on physiological optics, botany, the history of the exact natural sciences and education.

Friedrich Burckhardt was co-founder in 1860 and president of the Basler Hebelstiftung from 1868 to 1907 , a founding member of the Swiss grammar school teachers' association in 1863 and president of the Natural Research Society in Basel from 1866 to 1868, 1874 to 1876 and from 1886 to 1888 .

On October 10, 1888, Karl Friedrich Burckhardt was registered under matriculation no. 2770 admitted to the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . The University of Basel appointed him in 1860 to honor Dr. Dr. phil. hc and in 1874 an honorary doctorate Dr. med. hc

From 1855 he was married to Elisabeth (1836-1884), née Brenner, a daughter of the Swiss psychiatrist Friedrich Brenner . The zoologist Rudolf Burckhardt was the couple's son.

In 1898 Burckhardt commissioned a marble bust from the sculptor Max Leu , which he bequeathed to the Kunstmuseum Basel after his death .
