The Basler Hebelstiftung is a foundation under Swiss law in Basel . The foundation's task is to maintain the memory of the Alemannic dialect poet and theologian Johann Peter Hebel (1760–1826), who was born in Basel .

history

The foundation was set up on the occasion of a small celebration for the 100th birthday of Hebels on May 10, 1860 in the house of the Zunft zu Safran in Basel by the four professors Fritz Burckhardt-Brenner , Peter Merian , Wilhelm Vischer-Büfinger , Christian Friedrich Schönbein , and Johann Jakob Im Hof as well as Eduard Thurneysen and 50 other prominent citizens. The first president of the foundation was Christian Friedrich Schönbein.

The reason and originally the sole purpose of the foundation was the fulfillment of a last wish that was only passed on orally. He wanted the oldest men in his home town in the south of Baden, Hausen im Wiesental, to be given a glass of wine every Sunday and the four best students to be given a gift every year. However, since Leebel's banker went bankrupt, this wish could not be fulfilled at first.

The young grammar school teacher Fritz Burckhardt-Brenner, who had invited to the anniversary celebration, now took up the largely forgotten wish there; after an idea of the fiscal Johann Rudolf Burckhardt , a collection was made spontaneously. The foundation was brought into being with the 2,270 Swiss francs that were collected in just a few weeks - around 30,000 francs based on today's value (2010).

According to the foundation's statutes, 1 guilder was originally to be spent on this meal . As part of the feast or the ceremony for the awarding of the Johann-Peter-Hebel-Preis , a member of the foundation board has to give a “speech to the old men and women” according to the statutes.

In accordance with Hebel's request, a wedding gift will also be presented to all the local brides who have married last year (originally this gift was only given to “an innocent and at least well-to-do girl from Hausen, who got married in the course of this year or is now promised ") And the four best schoolchildren and trainees of the year receive a book of Hebels works. With the exception of one year (1944, i.e. during the Second World War), these obligations set out in the Foundation's statutes have been fulfilled every year so far. The Hebelstiftung delegation has also been taking a Basel school class to Hausen in Baden every year since 1989, because the “Hebelmähli” has been part of the diverse events on the same day since 1861 .
