Wilhelm Altwegg (born December 6, 1883 in Basel ; † February 13, 1971 ibid) was a Swiss classical philologist , Germanist and educator .

Life

Altwegg put 1902 on Humanities College Basel the Matura , and began studying classical philology in Basel and Berlin, which he in 1907 at the University of Basel with a dissertation on the philosopher antiphon finished. In the following year he got a job as a teacher for German and Latin in Biel ; In 1911 he switched to teaching at the Humanist Gymnasium in Basel.

A lifelong interest in the Basel-born poet Johann Peter Hebel and his work found expression u. a. in Altwegg's membership in the «Commission» of the Basel Lever- age Foundation from 1920 to 1966 (President 1935–1960).

In 1930 Altwegg completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in German philology in Basel. In 1935 his biography, which is still authoritative today, was published. In the same year he was elected President of the Basler Leverstiftung; he held this office until 1960.

In 1936 he received an extraordinary professorship with a teaching position for German poetry and storytelling at the University of Basel. In 1948 he retired as a teacher at the Humanist Gymnasium in Basel, and in 1953 he finished teaching at the university.
