Johann Balthasar Burckhardt (born April 3, 1642 in Basel ; † May 4, 1722 there ) was Mayor of Basel.

Life

Johann Balthasar Burckhardt was the son of the officer Hieronymus Burckhardt (1613–1646) and his wife Justina, b. Ottendorf (1607-1681). His brother was Christoph Burckhardt (1640–1720), pastor. Hans Balthasar Burckhardt (1587–1666), his grandfather, as well as his uncle Andreas Burckhardt (1604–1667), were mayors of Basel.

After the early death of his father, he received further education from his mother and paternal relatives, so that he studied philosophy and law; In 1659 he received his Bachelor of Artium . After completing his studies, he received practical training at various courts and administrations. The later mayor Rudolf Burckhardt (1620–1683), with whom he was not related, took him into his house and built him up in his office from 1665 to 1675 as his successor; Johann Balthasar Burckhardt accompanied him on his travels to the daily statutes . In 1669 he made a long trip to Holland and got to know the republican institutions there, and on the further trip he visited the Hanseatic cities .

In 1674 he became a sixth member of the guild as a key (member of the Grand Council) and in 1676 a councilor. From 1678 he took part in 122 meetings as envoy. In 1679 he was appointed syndicator in the Ennetbergische Vogteien in order to monitor and control the bailiffs and in 1681 he was elected head of the church and school system.

From 1684 to 1722 he was Thirteen (advisory assembly made up of nine members elected by the Minor Council and the four rulers of the city); During this time he was from 1690 to 1704 chief guild master.

In the political unrest, the 1691 character, he and 18 other councilors and several councilors were excluded from the council on March 24, 1691, because the strong influence of the Burckhardt, Socin and Faesch families on the members of the guilds and the council was increasing became a nuisance. At the end of July 1691 there were looting and incarceration in Basel, so that he and others had to leave the city and flee to Riehen . On the intervention of federal envoy, an armistice could be concluded and he was reinstated in office on November 4, 1691 and was then mayor of Basel from 1705 to 1722.

In 1712 he also acted as a successful mediator during the Toggenburg War in the Peace of Aarau; After the peace treaty he received letters of thanks from the Bern mayor Johann Friedrich Willading and Johann Anton von Graffenried (1658–1731), Bernese Grand Councilor, who later consulted him on important matters.

Johann Balthasar Burckhardt was married to Salome (1654–1721), daughter of Johann Gottfried, pharmacist, since 1674. They had three sons together:

  • Johann Balthasar Burckhardt (1676–1740), businessman, married to Susanna Raillard (1679–1710);
  • Johannes Burckhardt (1678–1701), fell during the Flanders Campaign ;
  • Hieronymus Burckhardt (born May 30, 1680 in Basel; † May 7, 1737 ibid), Antistes professor of theology and rector of the university, married to Katharina Ryhiner (1683–1727);

  • Christoph Burckhardt (1690–1757), clerk and councilor, married to Anna Bauhin (1693–1769).

One of his great-grandchildren was the future mayor of Basel Peter Burckhardt .
