Johann Friedrich (von) Willading (baptized February 7, 1641 in Bern , † December 5, 1718, presumably in Bern) was a Swiss statesman .

Life

His Bernese patrician family leave Willading was 1694 leader located in Berne anti-French party. His ambitions were initially to politically hinder the supremacy dominated by Louis XIV in Europe and to break his influence in Switzerland. He also helped the fleeing Huguenots for several years by granting them asylum .

In 1707, Willading, together with the international diplomat François-Louis de Pesmes de Saint-Saphorin , solved the question of the Neuchâtel succession. At that time there were around fifteen applicants for rule in Neuchâtel, including François Louis de Bourbon , a Bourbon favorite of Louis XIV, and Friedrich I from the House of Hohenzollern , who was nevertheless favored by Willading and Bern . Willading was successful: the choice fell on Friedrich. With that he had pushed the influence of the French back to the confederation's borders .

For the last ten years of his life he was mayor of Bern .
