Lukas Gernler

Lukas Gernler , often also Lucas Gernler , (born August 19, 1625 in Basel ; † February 9, 1675 ibid) was a Swiss theologian , university professor and antistes at Basel Minster .

Life

Gernler studied theology at the University of Basel and then went on an extensive educational trip through Switzerland, France , England and the Netherlands . After his return in 1648 he accepted the position as court preacher to Johann Ludwig von Erlach in Breisach . Two years later, in 1650, he came to the Basel Minster as a helper. In 1653 he became a Obersthelfer and on February 9, 1655 Basler Antistes . He held the last office until his death.

In addition to his preaching career, Gernler also embarked on an academic career. 1656 he was at the Theological Faculty of Dr. theol. PhD and Professor locorum communium et controversiarum appointed . In 1659 and 1673 he was rector of the university. In 1665 he switched to the professorship for the Old Testament. He obtained the establishment of an orphanage for Basel and the expansion of the Basel high school .
