Johann Rudolf Wettstein (born January 5, 1614 in Basel ; † December 11, 1684 ibid) was a Swiss Reformed theologian , university professor and librarian .

Life

Wettstein was the son of the Basel politician Johann Rudolf Wettstein . He began studying philosophy at the University of Basel in 1628 and received his master's degree in 1631 . He then devoted himself to studying theology. He was born on October 28, 1634 cand. Theol. Then he began to teach at the Basel University.

Wettstein received a professorship for Greek on March 3, 1637 . During this time he traveled to Switzerland, France , England and Germany. On March 10, 1643, he was promoted to the professorship of philosophy and in 1647 to the position of librarian at the University Library of Basel . With the Inauguralrede De origine et errorum dissensionum in religione he was 1649 Theodor Zwinger the Younger to Dr. theol. PhD .

Wettstein became the September 1, 1654 as professor of dogmatic theology and polemics at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel appointed and changed 25 January 1656 the Chair of New Testament. In the academic years 1656/1657 and 1669/1670 he was also rector of the university.

In 1661, with the help of his father, Wettstein was able to obtain the library from Bonifacius Amerbach at state expense for the university library . This collection contained parts of the estate of Erasmus of Rotterdam . In addition, the library was able to move into the Mücke house , which had more suitable rooms for the library.

The philologist and theologian Johann Rudolf Wettstein was his son.
