Theodor Zwinger the Younger , also Theodor II. Zwinger to distinguish it from his grandson, the botanist and medic Theodor Zwinger III. In 1627 he received the pastor's post at the Theodorskirche and in June 1630 moved up as the successor to Johannes Wolleb to pastor at Basel Minster . This office was linked to that of Antistes and the professorship for the Old Testament at the University of Basel , where Zwinger was also awarded a Dr. theol. received his doctorate. In 1636 and 1644, Zwinger was the rector of the university. As a staunch Calvinist , he exchanged pamphlets with the Strasbourg Lutherans Johann Schmidt (theologian, 1594) and Johann Georg Dorsche, and in 1644 achieved Basel's accession to the Second Helvetic Confession .

Zwinger married Anna Maria Werthemann in 1621, but she died in 1624. His second marriage to Magdalena Buxtorf (1604–1670) had five children, including the theology professor Johannes Zwinger (1634–1696) and Maria Magdalena Zwinger (1636–1676), who married the later Antistes Lukas Gernler (1625–1675).
