Von Salis, a member of the Graubünden noble family Salis , was born the son of pastor Johann Jakob von Salis (1821–1902) and his wife Marie Weitnauer. He grew up in Basel, where he attended grammar school, and studied Protestant theology at the universities of Basel , Berlin and Tübingen .

In 1871 he was ordained and then officiated (after a short vicariate in Bubendorf BL ) as a pastor in Braunau TG . In 1874 he took over a pastorate in Seltisberg (in the Liestal district of BL ). From there he was appointed to the Leonhard Church in Basel in 1886 as a "helper" (second pastor) . In 1891 he became the main pastor at Basel Minster and took over the office of antist (head) of the Basel Protestant Reformed Church associated with this pastoral office . Since the anti-government office was abolished in 1897 with the separation of church and state, von Salis was the last holder of this office, which goes back to Johannes Oekolampad . Instead, von Salis became President of the Council of Churches and held this office until 1918, that of the minster pastor until his retirement in 1921.

Von Salis campaigned for the founding of an umbrella organization of Protestant church aid associations in Switzerland (today Protestant Solidarity Switzerland ) and presided over its preliminary association from 1887 to 1921. The Reformation collection was initiated by him. In addition to theological and historical works (including numerous articles in the Basler Jahrbuch ), for which the University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1910 , he also wrote historical dramas and poems.

His marriage to Marie Hägler von Füllinsdorf (1859–1924) in 1880 resulted in two sons, including the archaeologist Arnold von Salis .

He found his final resting place in the Wolfgottesacker cemetery in Basel.
