Michael Raith (born January 12, 1944 in Basel ; † June 11, 2005 near Pratteln ) was a Swiss politician , historian , theologian and author .

Life

Raith grew up in Riehen . From 1962 to 1964 he trained as a bookseller in Berlin . He returned to Switzerland, attended the Church Theological School in Basel and completed his theology studies in 1972. From 1974 he built Die Dargebotene Hand (telephone 143, telephone counseling) in Basel and worked there as its director until 1991.

He was married and the father of two children. Michael Raith died of a heart attack while on a business trip.

politics

In 1970 Michael Raith was elected for the VEW (Association of Evangelical Voters, later Evangelical People's Party of Basel-Stadt ) in the Further Municipal Council (later residents' council ) in Riehen. He was a member of this body until 1994. From 1990 to 1991 he was its president. Between 1973 and 1979 and 1988 and 1998 he was a member of the Grand Council of the City of Basel. From 1995 to 1996 he was President of the Grand Council. The term of office was 21 months due to an extended legislative period. From 1998 until his death in AD 2005, he was mayor of Riehen.

Historian and author

Michael Raith worked as a historian and author of mostly local historical works. He was the author of the municipality of Riehen (first edition 1980, new version 1988). For decades he was a member of the commission for the yearbook z'Rieche , for which he also wrote over 40 articles. In addition, he wrote some articles for the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland (HLS).

In 1991 Michael Raith received the Riehen community's culture award. For his contributions to the local history, he was also in 1996 by the lever covenant Loerrach the lever thanks awarded.
