Theodor Zwinger III.
Theodor Zwinger III. (Born August 26, 1658 in Basel ; † April 22, 1724 ibid) was a Swiss physician and university professor .
Life
Zwinger came from an important family of scholars in Basel. His father was the Basel theology professor Johannes Zwinger . He studied from 1675 in Basel and received his in 1680 with the dissertation De paedotrophia the doctorate as Dr. med.
He then spent two years in France , including Paris and Strasbourg . After his return he went through a career as a university lecturer at the University of Basel . First he took over the professorship of rhetoric in 1684 , three years later the chair of physics , 1703 that of anatomy and botany , and in 1711 the chair of theoretical and practical medicine. He worked as a town doctor, was dean several times and rector in 1711/1712.
Zwinger turned down various high-value offers, including from the ruling houses of Baden-Durlach , Hessen-Kassel , Prussia and Württemberg . Only when the city of Freiburg im Breisgau called him for help in the midst of the epidemic in 1710, Zwinger followed this call to Freiburg.
Zwinger was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1685 . In 1706 he became a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences . He made outstanding contributions to paediatrics and physics classes in Basel. He also maintained an extensive correspondence, including with Johann Jakob Scheuchzer .
One of Zwinger's brothers was the theologian Johann Rudolf Zwinger . One son was the anatomist Johann Rudolph Zwinger . His nephew Johann Rudolf Mieg was also one of his students.
Honors
The plant genus Zwingera Hofer from the nightshade family (Solanaceae) is named after him.
