Johann Rudolf Zwinger (born September 12, 1660 in Basel ; † November 18, 1708 there ; also Johann Rudolph Zwinger ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor , theologian and university professor . From 1703 until his death he worked as an antistes of the Basel Church.

Life

The son of theologian Johannes Zwinger studied theology, obtained a master's degree in philosophy in 1676 , and then in 1784 the degree of cand. Theol. at the University of Basel . He then went to Zurich and Geneva , preaching for Prince Karl Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg , among others . The latter offered him a job, which he turned down on the advice of his father. In 1686 he was instead chaplain to the Stuppa regiment in Hainaut . From there he returned to Basel two years later in 1688.

In Basel graduated kennel at St. Alban his Vicariate , was founded in 1690 parish priest , then pastor of Liestal , before 1700, the position as pastor of St. Elizabeth took in Basel. After the death of Peter Werenfels , he took over his position. He became the chief pastor at Basel Minster and Antistes of the Basel Church and professor of theology at the University of Basel . In 1704 he was also promoted to Dr. theol. PhD .

In 1691 he married Katharina Mitz (1674–1703). His only son Andreas (1697–1764) also became a theologian and pastor at St. Leonhard in Basel.

In 1693 he campaigned at the synod for the promotion of handicraft in rural schools. He was a member of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts .
