Johannes Wolleb (also Johann ; born November 30, 1586 in Basel ; † November 24, 1629 there ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor and theologian. From 1618 until his death he worked as an antistes of the Basel Reformed Church .

Life

Johannes Wolleb, a son of councilor Oswald Wolleb (1564–1633) and his wife Anna Hürling (1559–1601), studied theology in his hometown from 1607 and was particularly influenced by Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf . After some time as a deacon, he became pastor at the (old) church of St. Elisabeth in Basel in 1611. As the successor to Johann Jakob Grynaeus , who died in 1617 , he was appointed pastor at Basel Minster on July 21, 1618 . This office was linked to that of the Antistes, i.e. the spiritual director of the church, as well as a professorship at the University of Basel , which Wolleb took over in October. For this he acquired the theological doctorate on November 30, 1619. In 1621/22 and 1629 he was the rector of the university. He died of the plague .

His marriage to Katharina Falkeisen (1592–1656) resulted in the sons Johann Jakob (1613–1667) and Theodor (1625–1667), who later also became pastors in Basel and died of the plague.

In addition to the theological dissertation on the doctrine of predestination , which he presented in terms of the Dordrecht Synod , Wolleb wrote only a few writings. For a long time its preparation for Holy Communion (1625) was used in the Basel church. His main work is the Compendium theologiae christianae of 1626, a concise textbook of Reformed theology based on the Syntagma theologiae christianae by his teacher Polanus von Polansdorf. It was translated into English and Dutch and used far beyond Switzerland until the late 18th century. As a representative work of Reformed Orthodoxy, it was received by Karl Barth in the 20th century .
