Amandus Polanus from Polansdorf
Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf (born December 16, 1561 in Troppau , † July 7 or July 18, 1610 in Basel ) was a German Reformed theologian .
Life
Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf, son of the town clerk Heinrich Polanus von Polansdorf, came from a noble family and grew up as a Lutheran. At the grammar school in Wroclaw he came under the influence of the Filipino headmaster Petrus Vincentius and later became a defender of the Calvinist predestination . That is why he moved from the University of Tübingen , where he began studying theology in 1583, to the universities in Basel , Geneva and Heidelberg . In 1590 he obtained his theological doctorate in Basel, but initially worked as a preacher in the Moravian Eibenschütz . In 1596 he returned to Basel to succeed Johannes Brandmüller (1533–1596) as professor in the subject of the Old Testament at the university. He carried out this activity until his death. In 1600 and 1609 he also served there as rector of the university. At the same time he worked closely with the Antistes Johann Jakob Grynaeus , whose daughter Maria (1573-1605) he had married in 1596. Together they both managed to bring the Basel pastors back into strict Reformed Orthodoxy.
Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf submitted the first Calvinist translation of the Bible in Geneva in 1603 . This was based on the Luther Bible , but Polanus adapted many formulations in the Calvinist sense. This translation caused great indignation among the Lutherans. His most influential work was the Syntagma theologiae christianae , first published in 1609 and reprinted several times , an extensive Reformed dogmatics that still influenced Karl Barth .
