Johann Rudolf Wettstein (philologist)

Johann Rudolf Wettstein (born September 1, 1647 in Basel ; † April 21, 1711 ibid) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and philologist .

Life

Wettstein was the son of the theologian Johann Rudolf Wettstein and grandson of the politician Johann Rudolf Wettstein . In 1660 he went to Zurich for two years as a pupil of Johann Caspar Schweizers to study the classical languages . He then attended the University of Basel , where he received his master's degree in philology in 1663 . Then he devoted himself to studying theology with Lukas Gernler , his father and Johannes Zwinger . He graduated on July 3, 1668 as cand. Theol. from. From 1668 to 1670 he went on an extensive educational journey through Switzerland, France , England , the Netherlands and Germany.

After his return to Basel in 1670, Wettstein was accepted as a deputy lecturer in logic at the university. On September 19, 1673 he received the professorship of eloquence and on April 1, 1684 the professorship of the Greek language. On June 2, 1685 he was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD and was able to switch to the theological faculty. On July 10, 1685 he received the professorship for dogmatics and polemics. On September 15, 1696 he moved to the chair of the Old and on October 5, 1703 to that of the New Testament. During this period he was rector of the university in 1689, 1701 and 1709 .

Wettstein was considered an excellent Graecist . His publications focused on Greek philology, Swiss history and theological issues.
