Ludwig August Burckhardt

Ludwig August Burckhardt (also Burckhardt-Wick ; born April 29, 1808 in Basel ; † November 27, 1863 ibid) was a Swiss historian and lawyer .

Life

Ludwig August Burckhardt studied law at the universities of Basel and Heidelberg . Whether he was already on while studying doctorate in law doctorate was or was given this title later, is not known. In his hometown he was initially a clerk of appeal before he was president of the criminal court in Basel from 1844 to 1853. He then worked as a private scholar in the field of Basel history.

Burckhardt was involved in many different ways in his hometown. As a liberal-conservative politician, he sat on the Grand Council of the City of Basel for a time , and was also a founding member of the General History Research Society of Switzerland , the Historical Society and the Antiquarian Society in Basel. He was also a member of the Basler Kunstverein and belonged to the Basler Reading Society.

Since 1850 he was married to Luise Elisabeth Wick (1820-1853). Their second oldest of four sons was Emil Burckhardt .
