Emil Burckhardt-De Bary

Emil Burckhardt-De Bary (born December 6, 1853 in Basel ; † October 12, 1905 there ) was a Swiss urologist and university professor.

Life

Emil Burckhardt came from the old Basel patrician family Burckhardt . His father was Ludwig August Burckhardt . He studied medicine at the Universities of Würzburg and Basel . In Würzburg he became a member of the Corps Nassovia in 1874 ; In 1877 he joined the Corps Alamannia in Basel. He completed his studies with a doctorate. med. from.

He went to London to learn cystoscopy and worked as a urologist for August Socin in Basel. In 1893 he published an atlas of cystoscopy. After August Socin's death, he was appointed associate professor to succeed him in urology at the University of Basel. In 1901 he finished the work Socin had started on injuries and diseases of the prostate. Burckhardt initiated the initiative to establish urology as a separate subject from surgery at the University of Basel.

On November 3, 1905, the Basel student body paid their last respects to Professors Emil Burckhardt-De Bary and Georg Kahlbaum, who died during the semester break, with a torchlight procession. He was married to Louise Valeria, b. De Bary (1865-1949).
