The Finsteraarhornhütte is a refuge of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) in the Bernese Alps .

Location and operation

The hut is on the steep west flank of the Finsteraarhorn at 3048  m approx. 100 m above the Fiescher glacier . The current building was built in 2003 in wood and steel construction, the ancient first and twice bridled hut serves as a winter room with space for 10 people. It has stood below the new hut since 1933.

The hut is operated by the Oberhasli section of the Swiss Alpine Club and is manned from March to September with short breaks. It offers space for 106 people. In addition, there is a year-round accessible winter room.

history

The Finsteraarhorn Hut was built in 1905 at its current location at 3,048  m . It was the old Oberaarjochhütte , which had served its purpose at the location there. However, this first hut with 12 places was soon too small and so in 1924 a two-storey stone building with 31 places was built. In 1933 the old hut was reined in for the second time and still serves as a winter room today. In 1969, the hut was expanded by around 40 percent of its original size from 1924. In 2004, today's new building was inaugurated. The height of the hut had to be corrected several times: in 1905 the height was still 3227  m , in 1924, however, 3165  m . The current altitude of 3,048  m has been found since 1969.

Approach and tours

The hut is relatively remote by alpine conditions and can only be reached via glacier tours . The shortest approach is from the Jungfraujoch in a southerly direction over the Jungfraufirn , the Grünhornlücke and the Fiescher Glacier and takes about 6 - 7 hours. The previously shortest approach was from Fiesch, via Fieschertal and the Fiescher glacier to the hut. Due to the retreat of the glacier, however, the Fiescher glacier is more fragmented than before and represents v. a. In the late year with little snow, this is an insurmountable obstacle in some places, which makes the ascent or descent considerably more dangerous and longer. For this way you need min. 8 - 9 hours. An alternative ascent from Fiesch is from Fiescheralp (accessible by cable car to Eggishorn ) to the Gletscherstube Märjelen and from there over the Aletsch Glacier to Konkordiaplatz , where the Konkordia Hut is located. Here the path joins that of the Jungfraujoch and continues over the Grünhornlücke .

Another path leads from the Oberaarjochhütte on the Oberaarjoch downwards over the Studer Glacier to where it joins the Fiescher Glacier, which then climbs up to the hut.

The transition from the Mönchsjochhütte over the saddle between Grosshorn and Hinter Fiescherhorn is less common .

Due to the central location in the eastern Bernese Alps, many mountains in the area are accessible, the local mountain is the Finsteraarhorn. In addition, u. a. Tours to the three Fiescherhorns Gross Fiescherhorn , Hinter Fiescherhorn and Klein Fiescherhorn (called Ochs ) as well as to the Gross Wannenhorn , the Fiescher Gabelhorn , the Studerhorn and the Agassizhorn are possible.
