The Gross Wannenhorn is 3905.9  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Bernese Alps . It is located in the Swiss canton of Valais . The summit offers a magnificent view of the Bernese four-thousand-meter peaks to the north and the Rhone Valley to the Valais Alps to the south .

Geography and description

The Gross Wannenhorn above the Aletsch Glacier
The Fiescher Glacier, on the left the eastern flank of the Gross Wannenhorn, the summit is just outside the picture

It is the highest peak of the so-called Walliser Fiescherhorns , not to be confused with the four-thousand-meter peaks Hinter and Gross Fiescherhorn to the north . This group is surrounded by glaciers on all sides except for the south side. The Fiescher Glacier runs in an arc to the east and the Great Aletsch Glacier to the west . To the northwest is Konkordiaplatz. To the north, the group is separated from the Gross Grünhorn by the Grünhornlücke .

The Gross Wannenhorn consists of a twin peak, a rocky north peak and a flatter south peak. The east side of the mountain is heavily glaciated, to the west it drops to the Great Aletsch Glacier with steep rock faces partly interrupted by glacier fields. A ridge leads south over the Wannenhornsattel ( 3669  m above sea level ) to the 3707  m above sea level. M. slightly lower small tub horn . Direct northern neighbor is the 3854  m above sea level. M. high Schönbühlhorn.

Summit routes

The easiest ascent is from the east via the northeast flank and the east ridge. The starting point is the Finsteraarhornhütte ( 3,048  m above sea level ). From here you cross the Fiescher glacier and climb over a partially very cleft glacier hollow , later over firn slopes to the summit. In winter and spring this route is a very popular and frequently frequented ski tour . The difficulty is rated WS according to the SAC mountain and high tour scale.

The north-west ridge from the Schönbühlhorn is the most difficult section of the complete north-south crossing of the Valais Fiescherhorns (ZS +). The south-east ridge (ZS) is ideal as a descent route after crossing it. The route leads to the southern Wannenhornsattel and from there over the small Wannenhorn glacier and further down rubble slopes to the Aletsch glacier.

First ascent

The first ascent of the Gross Wannenhorn took place on August 6, 1864 by Gottlieb Studer and Rudolf Lindt with Kaspar Blatter and Peter Sulzer over the eastern flank. With their descent to the west, this was also the first east-west crossing of the mountain. The north-west ridge was first climbed in August 1922, the south-east ridge in 1907 in descent and in 1919 in ascent.
