The Gross Grünhorn (also called Grosses Grünhorn ) is 4043.5 m above sea level. M. a four-thousand-meter peak in the Bernese Alps , which is in the Swiss canton of Valais . The summit structure consists of amphibolite rock containing green hornblende (amphibole), from which the name of the mountain is derived.
The first ascent was made on August 7, 1865 by Peter Michel, Edmund von Fellenberg , Peter Egger and Peter Inäbnit.
On April 28, 2011, his 52nd birthday, the Swiss extreme mountaineer Erhard Loretan died in a crash on the Grünhorn.
The starting point for the normal route over the Grünegghorn ( 3863 m ) and the southwest ridge is the Konkordia hut ( 2850 m ), accessible from Fiesch ( 1049 m ).
