The Eggishorn is 2926 m above sea level. M. high summit in the southeastern part of the Bernese Alps in Valais ( Switzerland ) above Fiesch . It lies within the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn mountain region, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 . Together with Fiescherhorli (2893 m) and Bettmerhorn (2872 m), the Eggishorn forms a steeply rising ridge running north-northeast-south-southwest, which slopes down to the Aletsch Glacier in the west and to the Fiescheralpe and the Rhone Valley in the east . Geologically, this ridge belongs to the metamorphic shell of the granitic Aar massif and consists of gneiss and mica schists . Due to the deep weathering , the rock on the surface is very fragmented as a huge rubble mountain, inside it is held together by permafrost .
The mountain, which is quite inconspicuous, owes its accessibility with a railway and its fame to the panorama that can be seen from Eggishorn; you can see many famous mountains such as Monte Leone , Monte Rosa , Matterhorn , Weisshorn , Mont Blanc , Aletschhorn , Jungfrau , Mönch , Eiger and Finsteraarhorn as well as the Aletsch Glacier .
Eggishorn cable car
The Eggishorn can be reached with the cable car from Fiesch, which was completed in 1966 . The lift is divided into two sections: Fiesch - Fiescheralp / Kühboden and Fiescheralp / Kühboden - Eggishorn. On the Fiesch - Fiescheralp section, the cable car overcomes an altitude difference of 1146 m and on the Fiescheralp / Kühboden - Eggishorn section of 655 m. The journey from the valley station to the mountain station takes 15 minutes. The mountain station is at 2866 m above sea level. M. . From the station, a path leads to the summit in 15 minutes. The operation of the railway was temporarily suspended in October 2019 due to changes in the terrain at the mountain station due to thawed permafrost for safety reasons.
