Martin Heinrich Burckhardt-Henrici (born March 5, 1921 in Basel ; † February 6, 2007 there ) was a Swiss architect , politician ( LDP ) and patron .

After attending school in Basel, Martin Burckhardt began studying architecture at the ETH Zurich , which he completed in 1945 with a diploma. In 1951, together with his father Karl August (1879–1960) and partner Karl Eckert, he founded the company Burckhardt Architects in Basel (since 1973 Burckhardt + Partner). From 1970 he was a lecturer and from 1979 to 1982 professor at EPFL in Lausanne . In the 1950s and 1960s, the office established itself with numerous administrative and industrial buildings, primarily for the chemical industry and the banking sector. The office was able to open branches in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Mexico, Brazil, the United States and Australia, among others. In 1990 he left the management of Burckhardt + Partner. In 2006 the office was the largest Swiss architecture firm with 219 employees. Burckhardt built the University's Biozentrum in Basel from 1967 to 1970, the BIZ from 1972 to 1976 and the Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne from 1980 to 1987.

politics

From 1955 to 1975 Burckhardt was a member of the Basel Art Commission. In 1961, in memory of his father, he founded the Karl August Burckhardt-Koechlin-Fonds in order to acquire drawings, watercolors and gouaches from the 20th century for the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett of the Kunstmuseum Basel . From 1984 to 1988 he was President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Basel . He sat on the Basel Grand Council from 1976 to 1988 and on the National Council from 1987 to 1991 , where he was primarily active in the areas of education, culture and foreign policy. He was a member of the Parliamentary Reform Commission and the Seville World Exhibition Commission in 1992 .
