Max Burckhardt

Max Burckhardt (born December 14, 1910 in Basel ; † July 29, 1993 there ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

Max Burckhardt, son of a doctor of the same name, studied history, philosophy and church history in Basel, Berlin and Munich .

In 1938 he received his doctorate in Berlin with the dissertation The Collection of Letters of Bishop Avitus von Vienne (d. 518) .

From 1940 to 1976 he headed the manuscript department of the Basel University Library . 1948–1972 he was editor of the Basler Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Altertumskunde . In addition, he edited 1945-1948 and, together with his wife Ruth geb. Menzi, 1965–1988 the Basel Bibliography .

His main work is the edition of Jacob Burckhardt's letters in 10 volumes (1949–1994).

Together with Alfred Remigius Weber and Edgar Bonjour , Burckhardt was made an honorary member of the Historical and Antiquarian Society of Basel in 1990.
