Howlin 'Wolf is the second studio album by US blues musician Howlin' Wolf . It was released on Chess Records in 1962 . The recordings were produced by Ralph Bass .

As with the previous album Moanin 'in the Moonlight , released in 1959 , the album was not created with the aim of actually filling an album. Rather, six previously released singles have now been collected in the form of a long-playing record with as yet unreleased material. This gives the album the character of a compilation and partly explains why such a large number of different session musicians were involved in the recordings.

On the cover of the record you can see a rocking chair with an acoustic guitar leaning against it. Based on this illustration by Don Bronstein, the album is also often called The Rockin 'Chair Album . The title separates it more clearly from the follow-up work The Howlin 'Wolf Album , published in 1969 .

The album is one of the most significant releases of the Chicago blues era and, like Moanin 'in the Moonlight, was an artistic and commercial success. Some pieces like Wang Dang Doodle have been covered . The Rolling Stone rated it five out of five stars and lists is ranked 223 in its list of the 500 best albums of all time . Allmusic currently rates it with 4.5 out of 5 stars.
